The Combined Graduate Level examination is the Staff Selection Commission’s flagship recruitment and one of the largest graduate-level examinations in India. A single test opens 44 individual posts across central ministries, departments and organisations, spanning Pay Level 4 to Level 8.

The SSC CGL 2026 notification carried 12,256 vacancies. Applications closed on 22 June 2026, and the correction window closed on 3 July 2026. Tier 1 is scheduled for August–September 2026 and Tier 2 for December 2026.
This guide is therefore written for two readers: candidates now preparing for Tier 1, and those planning the 2027 cycle.

The 2026 cycle introduced the most consequential change in years — sectional timing in both Tier 1 and Tier 2 — and it carries one provision that ends candidatures after selection, which is set out in Section 6.

1. What Changed in 2026
| Change | Detail |
|---|---|
| Sectional timing | Introduced in both Tier 1 and Tier 2. Candidates get a fixed time per section and cannot switch between sections during the allotted time |
| AAO and AAcO restored | Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer posts were added back to the vacancy list |
| Tier 2 structure | Three papers — Paper 1 compulsory for all; Paper 2 for JSO and Statistical Investigator Grade II; Paper 3 for AAO/AAcO |
Sectional timing is the change that matters most.
Previously, a candidate could carry unused time from a strong section into a weak one. That is no longer possible. Each section has a fixed window, and it closes.
The consequence for preparation: aspirants must prepare all subjects equally well, and optimise speed and accuracy within each section’s allotted time rather than across the paper as a whole. A candidate who is exceptional at Quantitative Aptitude and weak at English can no longer compensate — the English section closes on schedule regardless of how quickly the Quant section was finished.
2. The Post Hierarchy
| Pay Level | Basic Pay | Grade Pay | Representative Posts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 8 | ₹47,600 | ₹4,800 | Assistant Audit Officer (AAO), Assistant Accounts Officer — Group B Gazetted |
| Level 7 | ₹44,900 | ₹4,600 | Income Tax Inspector (CBDT), GST / Central Excise Inspector (CBIC), Sub-Inspector (CBI), Assistant Enforcement Officer (AEO), Inspector (CBN), Assistant Section Officer |
| Level 6 | — | ₹4,200 | Junior Statistical Officer (JSO), Statistical Investigator Grade II, Sub-Inspector (NIA) |
| Level 5 | — | ₹2,800 | Auditor, Accountant |
| Level 4 | ₹25,500 | ₹2,400 | Tax Assistant, Upper Division Clerk |
On Assistant Section Officer: sources place ASO at Level 7 and, for the CSS, MEA and AFHQ cadres, at Level 8. Confirm the level for the specific cadre in the notification.
The highest-paying commonly allotted posts are Assistant Audit Officer at Level 8 and the Inspector grades at Level 7.
Note on ASO (CSS): the posting is primarily in Delhi, an X-category city, so HRA at the X rate applies — which makes the overall package among the highest in CGL. As in CHSL’s JSA, the posting city does real work here.
Level 7 in metro cities draws a gross only marginally below Level 8, because X-city HRA compensates for much of the basic pay difference.
3. Income Tax Inspector
The most sought-after post in CGL, and the one with the highest cut-offs.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Department | Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Ministry of Finance |
| Classification | Group C |
| Pay Level | Level 7 |
| Basic Pay | ₹44,900 |
| In-hand | Reported between ₹58,956 – ₹69,396 and ₹71,576 – ₹80,556, depending on DA and city |
| Recruitment | Only through SSC CGL — there is no separate exam |
On the in-hand figures: the range varies because DA is revised twice yearly and HRA depends on city class. One computation at the 60% DA rate (January 2026) for the entry cell puts in-hand at ₹71,576 – ₹80,556. Older computations at lower DA give ₹58,956 – ₹69,396. For a Level 7 Inspector in an X-city, total monthly deductions average ₹10,500 – ₹12,800, giving a net of approximately ₹75,000 – ₹80,000.
The Job Profile — Two Wings
Assessment wing — scrutiny of income-tax returns, processing refunds, handling TDS and related matters, and assisting in assessments. Largely desk-based.
Non-assessment / investigation wing — verification, survey and search-related field work supporting enforcement. A mix of desk and field work, including participation in rapid response teams conducting raids, intelligence gathering and evidence collection against defaulters.
Postings are anywhere in the country, with periodic transfers.
The Promotion Ladder
Inspector (Level 7) → Income Tax Officer (Level 8, gazetted) → Assistant Commissioner (Level 10, Group A) → higher commissioner grades
Progression is through a mix of seniority and the departmental examination, and depends on vacancies and service rules.
The significant point: the ladder crosses from Group C into Group A. Very few Group C entries in Indian government service have a defined route into the Group A cadre.
The Honest Trade-offs
Workload, transfers across locations, the pressure of applying complex tax law, and public scrutiny. Peak assessment and enforcement periods are demanding.
4. Auditor and Tax Assistant
Auditor — Level 5, Grade Pay ₹2,800, principally under the CAG. Audit of government accounts and expenditure.
Tax Assistant — Level 4, basic ₹25,500, scale ₹25,500 – ₹81,100.
Note for readers of our earlier articles: Tax Assistant is the post reachable departmentally from Customs Havaldar through the promotion examination route — the same post that requires graduation and CGL in direct recruitment. Both doors lead to the same place.
5. Eligibility
Educational Qualification
A bachelor’s degree from a recognised University or an equivalent qualification for most posts.
Post-specific exceptions:
| Post | Additional requirement |
|---|---|
| Junior Statistical Officer | 60% in Mathematics at Class 12, or Statistics as a subject at graduation level |
| AAO / AAcO | Post-specific qualifications apply — see the notification |
Age — Varies by Post
| Age band | Posts |
|---|---|
| 18 to 27 years | Auditor, Tax Assistant |
| 18 to 30 years | Inspector grades, Assistant Section Officer |
| 20 to 30 years | Sub-Inspector (CBI) |
| 18 to 32 years | Junior Statistical Officer |
This is not a single age limit. A candidate at 31 is outside the Inspector band but within JSO. A candidate at 28 is outside Auditor and Tax Assistant but within the Inspector grades. Check the band for each post you prefer.
6. The Preference Rule — Read This Before Setting Preferences
This is the provision that ends candidatures after selection, and it is stated explicitly in the notification.
Final allotment of posts is made on the basis of merit-cum-preference of posts given by the candidate. Once a post is allotted, no change of posts will be made by the Commission due to non-fulfilment of any post-specific requirements of physical, medical or educational standards.
In plain terms: if a candidate gives a higher preference to a post, is selected for it, and then fails to meet that post’s medical, physical or educational standards, the candidature is rejected. The Commission will not move them to another post they do qualify for.
The practical instruction: do not set a high preference for a post whose physical standards (Sub-Inspector CBI, Inspector CBN), medical standards, or educational conditions (JSO’s Mathematics requirement) you cannot meet. A preference is not an aspiration — it is a binding allocation instruction, and a mismatch forfeits the entire cycle.
Set preferences on job profile, promotion prospects, posting location and work-life balance — not on salary alone.
7. Examination Pattern
Tier 1
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Questions | 100 — 25 each in General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, English |
| Duration | 60 minutes |
| Negative marking | 0.5 marks per wrong answer |
| Sectional timing | Yes — newly introduced |
| Mode | Computer Based Test |
Tier 2
| Paper | For whom |
|---|---|
| Paper 1 | Compulsory for all candidates, irrespective of post applied for |
| Paper 2 | Only candidates shortlisted for Junior Statistical Officer (Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation) and Statistical Investigator Grade II (Registrar General and Census Commissioner) |
| Paper 3 | Only candidates shortlisted for Assistant Audit Officer / Assistant Accounts Officer |
Papers 1, 2 and 3 are conducted in separate shifts or on separate days.
Tier 2 additionally includes Computer Knowledge and a Data Entry Speed Test, and carries sectional timing.
The syllabus is published in the official notification — candidates need not refer to any other source for it.
8. Salary Growth
| Component | Detail |
|---|---|
| Range | ₹25,500 (Level 4) to ₹47,600 (Level 8) basic |
| In-hand | Approximately ₹35,000 to ₹85,000+, by post and city |
| Annual increment | 3% |
| DA revision | Twice yearly |
| Deductions | NPS at 10% of basic, CGHS, income tax |
After 10 years of service, most SSC CGL officers see gross salary nearly double, through increments and DA revisions.
On tax: most SSC CGL employees in the first years of service fall in the 20% slab or below, after standard deduction, NPS deduction under Section 80CCD(2) and HRA exemption where applicable.
9. For the 2027 Cycle — Application Notes
The 2026 window has closed. For the next cycle:
- Complete One-Time Registration on ssc.gov.in in advance.
- Apply within the window — 2026’s ran 21 May to 22 June, with fee payment to 23 June.
- Fee: ₹100 for General and OBC; nil for women, SC, ST, PwBD and eligible Ex-Servicemen.
- Set post preferences deliberately, against the standards you can actually meet.
- Note the correction window — 2026’s was 1 to 3 July, three days only.
10. Documents Checklist
- ☐ Bachelor’s degree — certificate and mark sheets
- ☐ Class 12 mark sheet — showing 60% Mathematics, if applying for JSO
- ☐ Class 10 certificate — age proof
- ☐ Caste / category certificate
- ☐ EWS certificate, where applicable
- ☐ PwBD certificate, where applicable
- ☐ Ex-Servicemen discharge certificate, where applicable
- ☐ OTR registration number
- ☐ Photograph and signature to specification
- ☐ Printed admit card and valid photo ID
11. Assessment
SSC CGL is the widest single graduate opportunity in India — one examination, 44 posts, 12,256 vacancies, Pay Levels 4 to 8, across central ministries.
In favour:
- Bachelor’s degree in any discipline for most posts, no minimum percentage
- Fee ₹100, or nil for women and reserved categories
- Level 7 Inspector posts at ₹44,900 basic, in-hand approaching ₹75,000 – ₹80,000 in X-cities
- A promotion ladder from Group C into Group A — Inspector → ITO → Assistant Commissioner
- Age to 32 for JSO, wider than IBPS PO’s 30
Against:
- Sectional timing in both tiers removes the ability to compensate across sections
- Cut-offs for Inspector posts are among the highest in CGL
- Age as low as 27 for Auditor and Tax Assistant
- The preference rule is unforgiving — a mismatch on post-specific standards rejects the candidature outright
Recommendations: if preparing for Tier 1 in August–September, treat sectional timing as the defining constraint and prepare every section to a floor rather than optimising one. If planning for 2027, note that Auditor and Tax Assistant close at 27 — those bands expire first. And when preferences open, check the physical, medical and educational standards of every post you rank highly, because the Commission will not reallocate you if you fail them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Is SSC CGL 2026 still open? No. Applications closed on 22 June 2026, with fee payment to 23 June and a correction window from 1 to 3 July 2026. Tier 1 is scheduled for August–September 2026 and Tier 2 for December 2026.
Q2. What is the Income Tax Inspector salary? Pay Level 7, basic ₹44,900. In-hand is reported between ₹58,956 – ₹69,396 and ₹71,576 – ₹80,556, depending on the DA rate and city class. For a Level 7 Inspector in an X-city, deductions average ₹10,500 – ₹12,800, giving a net of approximately ₹75,000 – ₹80,000.
Q3. Which SSC CGL post pays the most? Assistant Audit Officer at Level 8, basic ₹47,600, a Group B Gazetted post. Assistant Section Officer (CSS) is also highly rated because the Delhi posting attracts X-city HRA. Level 7 Inspector posts in metros draw a gross only marginally below Level 8.
Q4. What is the biggest change in 2026? Sectional timing in both Tier 1 and Tier 2. Candidates receive a fixed time per section and cannot switch between sections. AAO and AAcO posts were also restored to the vacancy list, and Tier 2 now has three papers.
Q5. What is the age limit? It varies by post: 18–27 for Auditor and Tax Assistant; 18–30 for Inspector grades and ASO; 20–30 for Sub-Inspector (CBI); 18–32 for Junior Statistical Officer.
Q6. Can I change my post after allotment? No. Allotment is on merit-cum-preference, and once a post is allotted, no change is made on grounds of non-fulfilment of post-specific physical, medical or educational standards. A candidate who fails those standards has their candidature rejected.
Q7. Is there a separate exam for Income Tax Inspector? No. Recruitment is only through SSC CGL. A bachelor’s degree in any discipline is required, followed by Tier 1, Tier 2 and document verification, after which posts are allotted by merit and preference.
Q8. What is the negative marking? 0.5 marks are deducted for each wrong answer in Tier 1.
Disclaimer: This article is for general information only. Vacancy numbers are tentative and may be revised by the Commission. Eligibility, age limits, pay levels, examination pattern, fees and dates are set by the official SSC notification and are revised each cycle. Secondary sources conflict on the pay level of Assistant Section Officer across cadres and on the in-hand salary of Income Tax Inspector, which varies with the prevailing DA rate and city classification. Candidates must read the official notification PDF on ssc.gov.in before applying and treat it as the final authority.
