NABARD Grade A Recruitment 2026: Assistant Manager Posts, Eligibility and Selection Process

NABARD — the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development — is an all-India Apex Organisation wholly owned by the Government of India, headquartered in Mumbai with regional offices across the country. It recruits Assistant Managers in Grade ‘A’ through an annual examination conducted for the Rural Development Banking Service (RDBS), Rajbhasha, Legal and Protocol & Security Service streams.

The 2025-26 cycle is complete — Phase I on 20 December 2025, Phase II on 25 January 2026, final result declared — carrying 91 vacancies.

The 2026 notification is expected between July and August 2026, with the Prelims anticipated around September.

Two structural facts should shape preparation, and both are counter-intuitive: a postgraduate degree at 55% substitutes for a bachelor’s at 60% — and within the Preliminary examination itself, only three sections actually count.

1. The Qualification Routes

StreamRequirement
RDBS (General)Bachelor’s degree in any subject with minimum 60%or Post Graduate / MBA / PGDM with minimum 55%or CA / CS / CMA / ICWAor PhD
RDBS (Agriculture)Bachelor’s in Agriculture / Allied Sciences — or Post Graduate in the same, with 60%
RDBS (IT)Four-year Bachelor’s in Computer Science / Engineering / IT / Electronics / AI / ML with 60% — or relevant PG with 55% — or Graduate + DOEACC B Level with 60% — or B.E./B.Tech in CS/IT/Electronics — or MCA with 60%
RDBS (Finance)Bachelor’s in Finance/Banking — or PG Diploma / MBA / MMS (Finance) with a Bachelor’s — or Bachelor of Financial & Investment Analysis — or membership of ICAI / ICMAI / CFA (USA) / FRM (GARP)
Chartered AccountantBachelor’s Degree + Membership of ICAI
Company SecretaryBachelor’s Degree + Associate/Fellow Membership of ICSI
Agriculture EngineeringBachelor’s in Agriculture Engineering with 60% — or PG with 55%
RajbhashaPost Graduate Degree in Hindi with English as one subject at degree level — or vice versa

The Postgraduate Arbitrage

Read the General stream row carefully.

A bachelor’s degree requires 60%. A postgraduate degree requires 55%.

A candidate with 57% in graduation is not eligible on the bachelor’s route — but is eligible on the PG route with a Master’s at 55%.

This is the same structure as RBI Grade B, where 60% graduation or 55% post-graduation qualifies for the General stream. The postgraduate route is not merely an alternative; for candidates below 60%, it is the only route.

And CA, CS, CMA, ICWA or a PhD qualify independently — with no percentage condition attached in the General stream.

Two Provisions Worth Noting

Rajbhasha is genuinely postgraduate-gated. It requires a Post Graduate Degree in Hindi with English as one subject at degree level, or the reverse. There is no bachelor’s route.

The Finance stream accepts international qualifications. CFA (USA) and FRM (GARP) are listed alongside ICAI and ICMAI — unusual among the examinations in this series, and directly relevant to candidates who took the professional rather than academic route.

A conflict to verify: sources differ on the SC/ST/PwBD relaxation for the General stream bachelor’s route — one states 55%, another 50%. Check the notification.

Nationality: Indian citizens only.

Attempts: There is no restriction on the number of attempts.

2. The Preliminary Examination — Where Only Three Sections Count

This is the provision that should reallocate preparation time, and it is widely misunderstood.

FeatureDetail
Total marks200
Duration2 hours
Negative marking0.25 — one quarter — per wrong answer
NatureQualifying — Phase 1 marks are not counted in the final merit list

The Section Split

CategorySections
Qualifying only — marks NOT countedReasoning, English Language, Computer Knowledge, Quantitative Aptitude, Decision Making
Merit — marks countedGeneral Awareness, Economic & Social Issues (ESI), Agriculture & Rural Development (ARD)

“Candidates will be shortlisted for the Mains Exam based on the marks obtained in the Merit section only.”

Two consequences follow, and they are both significant.

First: a candidate who scores heavily in Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude — the sections most banking aspirants have already mastered — gains nothing toward the Phase 1 shortlist. Those sections must be cleared, and no more.

Second: the shortlist is decided by General Awareness, ESI and ARD — the three sections a general banking aspirant is least likely to have prepared.

A candidate preparing for IBPS PO and adding NABARD as a backup is preparing the wrong three sections.

And Phase 1 does not count toward the final merit at all. Its function is to shortlist, on those three sections only.

3. The Main Examination

ComponentDetail
StructureObjective and descriptive sections
Paper 1Descriptive Englishessay, précis and reading comprehension, assessing clarity and analytical depth
Paper 2Stream-specific
Negative marking1/4 marks deducted for every wrong answer — in both Prelims and Mains

Final selection is based on aggregate marks in Phase 2 (Paper 1 and Paper 2) plus the Interview.

The descriptive English paper is not a formality. NABARD’s own thematic territory — rural development, agricultural reforms, financial inclusion — is where the essays sit. Practise on those topics specifically, not on generic essay banks.

4. Agriculture & Rural Development — The Deciding Subject

ARD is the differentiating paper, and the guidance across sources is consistent: dedicate at least 40% of preparation time to it.

The territory:

AreaTopics
Indian AgricultureCrop seasons — Kharif, Rabi, Zaid — major crops, MSP, food security
Rural CreditKisan Credit Card (KCC), SHG-Bank Linkage, NABARD’s own role
Government SchemesPM-KISAN, MGNREGA, PMFBY, e-NAM, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana
Agricultural FinancePriority sector lending norms, RIDF, microfinance
CooperativesPACS, cooperative banks, NABFINS
Rural DevelopmentPanchayati Raj system, watershed development, rural infrastructure
Environmental IssuesClimate change impacts on agriculture, sustainable farming

For Economic & Social Issues: NCERT Economics (Class 11 and 12), the Economic Survey, and monthly current affairs.

Note how much of ARD is NABARD’s own business — KCC, SHG-Bank Linkage, RIDF, PACS, NABFINS. As with RBI Grade B’s DEPR stream, the institution’s own function is the syllabus.

5. Selection Process

StreamStages
RDBS / Legal / RajbhashaPrelimsMainsInterview — with a Psychometric Test in the process
Protocol & Security ServiceA shorter process — sources describe online examination and interview, and NABARD’s own notices reference a Psychometric Test for P&SS

The Interview carries 50 marks.

The Psychometric Test is an MCQ paper of 90 minutes. NABARD’s career notices confirm it operates in practice — call letters for the Psychometric Test have been issued in past cycles, including separately for Protocol & Security Service candidates.

Sources differ on whether the process is formally three or four stages, and on the exact P&SS structure. Verify in the notification.

6. Salary

ComponentDetail
Basic pay₹44,500
Pay scale₹44,500 – 2500 (4) – 54,500 – 2850 (7) – 74,450 – EB – 2850 (4) – 85,850 – 3300 (1) – 89,150 over 17 years
Maximum basic₹89,150 after 17 years
GrossApproximately ₹1,00,000 per month
IncludesDA, TA, HRA, Grade Allowance, Local Compensatory Allowance

A conflict worth flagging: one source places the gross monthly salary at approximately ₹1,60,699. The figure quoted consistently elsewhere — and consistent with the ₹44,500 basic — is approximately ₹1,00,000. Verify against the notification.

Where It Sits

PostBasicGross
RBI Grade B₹78,450~₹1,54,936
LIC AAO₹88,635~₹1,26,000
NABARD Grade A₹44,500~₹1,00,000
IBPS PO₹48,480~₹80,000–83,000

NABARD sits below RBI Grade B and LIC AAO, and above IBPS PO.

But note the comparison that matters for a candidate choosing between them: NABARD’s 60% graduation or 55% PG bar is the same as RBI’s. The two examinations gate on identical qualifications and pay differently. A candidate eligible for one is generally eligible for the other — and RBI Grade B pays approximately ₹55,000 more per month gross.

The counterweight is that RBI notified 60 posts in 2026 against NABARD’s 91, and NABARD’s ARD-weighted syllabus draws a narrower, more specialised field — agriculture and rural development candidates rather than the general banking pool.

  • ICAI / ICSI / ICMAI / CFA (USA) / FRM (GARP) documentation, for the relevant streams
  • DOEACC B Level certificate, where relied upon for IT
  • Post Graduate degree in Hindi, with English at degree level — for Rajbhasha

  • Caste / category certificate
  • EWS certificate, where applicable
  • PwBD certificate, where applicable
  • Photograph (JPG), signature (JPG), thumb impression, declaration
  • ☐ Printed confirmation page

9. Assessment

In favour:

  • The PG route at 55% substitutes for a bachelor’s at 60% — the only route for candidates below 60%
  • CA, CS, CMA, ICWA and PhD qualify independently
  • CFA (USA) and FRM (GARP) accepted for the Finance stream
  • No restriction on the number of attempts
  • Basic ₹44,500, gross approximately ₹1,00,000, rising to a basic of ₹89,150 over 17 years
  • 91 vacancies in the last cycle — more than RBI Grade B’s 60
  • A specialised field — the ARD weighting draws agriculture and rural development candidates rather than the whole banking pool
  • Multiple streams — RDBS, Rajbhasha, Legal, P&SS — including several professional routes
  • NABARD offers its own Pre-Recruitment Training

Against:

  • Gross approximately ₹1,00,000 — around ₹55,000 below RBI Grade B, on the same qualification bar
  • Only three Phase 1 sections count — GA, ESI and ARD — which are the sections a general banking aspirant has not prepared
  • ARD requires roughly 40% of preparation time, and has no overlap with any other examination in this series
  • Negative marking of 1/4 in both Prelims and Mains
  • Descriptive English in the Mains

Recommendations:

If your graduation is below 60% but you hold a Master’s at 55% or above, NABARD is open — as is RBI Grade B, on the same terms. Apply to both.

Do not prepare NABARD as an IBPS paper. Reasoning, English, Quantitative Aptitude, Computer Knowledge and Decision Making are qualifying only in Phase 1 — clearing them is sufficient, and marks above the threshold are wasted. The shortlist is decided by General Awareness, ESI and ARD.

Give ARD 40% of your time. It is the deciding subject, and much of it is NABARD’s own function — KCC, SHG-Bank Linkage, RIDF, PACS, NABFINS, priority sector lending. Read the institution before the textbook.

And if you are eligible for both NABARD and RBI Grade B, note the pay difference honestly. RBI pays approximately ₹55,000 more per month gross, on the same qualification. NABARD’s advantages are a larger intake, a narrower field, and — for candidates whose background is genuinely agriculture and rural development — a syllabus they already know.
