The Rules were finalised on 28 March 2023.
Note the age band: 18 to 25. Narrow — the same as SSC MTS, and narrower than SSC CGL’s Inspector grades (30) or RRB NTPC graduate (36).
The role: “Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) to handle the museum’s daily operations and security.”
That is where “security guard” and “helper” work actually sits — under the MTS designation, at Level 1, as a permanent, pensionable Central Government post with CGHS, LTC, Gratuity and NPS.

Note the qualifications. These are not archaeology or museology posts. Journalism and Mass Communication, Media Science, Fine Arts, Visual Arts, Commercial Arts — the museum was hiring communicators, not curators.
For a media, design or communications graduate, that is a genuinely unexpected door into a Ministry of Culture institution.
Indian Museum also ran a Consultant recruitment for three posts in 2026, with reports of four roles.

4. The Three Routes
This is the structure a candidate needs, because no single portal carries museum jobs.

The UPSC route is worth naming. The Ministry of Culture’s own vacancies page carries circulations of UPSC advertisements — which means senior Culture and ASI posts are recruited by UPSC, not by the institution.
And the Ministry of Culture recruits across its institutions. Past notifications include a Library & Information Assistant at the Anthropological Survey of India (ansi.gov.in), and a Senior Secretariat Assistant in Kolkata — both offline applications.
Monitor culture.gov.in/offering/vacancies alongside the individual museum sites. The Ministry is the aggregator for its own institutions.
5. The Ministry of Culture’s Own Conditions
The Ministry publishes standing conditions that apply across its recruitment, and two of them matter.
“All the qualifying qualifications should be regular course(s) from AICTE/UGC approved/recognized universities/Deemed Universities/Institutes.”
“The Essential Qualifications mentioned are the minimum and mere possession of the same does not entitle the candidate to claim selection.”
Read the second one plainly. Meeting the eligibility does not entitle you to a call. As documented in our NHM guide, where state portals state the same thing, the minimum qualification is a filter, not a claim.
“All the essential qualifications must be completed on the date of submission of the Application.” Result-awaited candidates are not eligible.
“The minimum age limit should be 18 Years. The Maximum age limit will vary from post to post.”
And a procedural point: “Candidates can take a print of the application form and keep it with them for their own records, and you should submit the signed application at the time of the written test/Interview.”

Bengali Helps
“While the official language is English/Hindi, proficiency in Bengali is highly beneficial for administrative and guide roles due to the museum’s location in Kolkata.”
Not a formal requirement — but stated as “highly beneficial.” As documented across this series — Punjabi at Matric for Punjab’s Jail Warder, Odia for Odisha’s Food Safety Officer, Tamil for TNUSRB — the regional language is rarely incidental in a state-located post.
Multiple Applications Are Permitted
“Yes, provided you meet the eligibility for each post and submit separate application forms and fees as per the advertisement.”
A candidate eligible for more than one post may apply for each — with a separate form and a separate fee. The same structure as RRB Technician, where each Pay Level carries its own fee.
Accommodation Is Duty-Linked
“Accommodation is limited and generally provided based on seniority and the essential nature of the duty (like security or curation).”
Note what that implies. Security and curation are named as “essential” duties — which means MTS staff on security duty are among those prioritised for accommodation, alongside curators.
For a Level 1 post at ₹18,000, museum accommodation materially changes the arithmetic.
Citizenship
“Permanent posts are strictly for Indian citizens. Foreign experts may only be engaged as consultants or on short-term research fellowships.”
7. What These Institutions Are
The Indian Museum, Kolkata was founded in 1814 at the cradle of the Asiatic Society of Bengal — at the present building of the Asiatic Society, 1 Park Street, Kolkata.
It is “the oldest and largest multipurpose museum” — described as the earliest and largest not only in the Indian subcontinent but in the Asia-Pacific region of the world.

Do not wait for a museum notification. Four in three years, with none currently open. Monitor culture.gov.in/offering/vacancies, not just the museum sites. The Ministry aggregates its own institutions — Indian Museum, National Museum, ASI, the Anthropological Survey of India — and circulates UPSC advertisements for senior posts.
