The Food Corporation of India is the government’s warehousing employer. Established on 14 January 1965 — with its first district office at Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu — it is a statutory body under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, managing India’s food security through procurement, storage and distribution of foodgrains across 170+ depots and hundreds of regional offices.

FCI Recruitment 2026 is expected to carry approximately 33,566 vacancies across Categories I to IV — including around 27,345 Assistant Grade III posts alone.
One clarification on terminology: “Store Keeper” is not an FCI post name. The warehousing role is Assistant Grade III (Depot) — one of five departments within the AG-III cadre. The support tier is Watchman, under Category IV.

And the provision that decides outcomes: you choose one zone and one post, and neither can be changed after submission.

1. The Category Structure
| Category | Posts | Pay |
|---|---|---|
| Category I | Group A officer posts | — |
| Category II | Manager — General, Depot, Movement, Accounts, Technical | ₹40,000 – ₹1,40,000; gross approximately ₹71,000 |
| Category III | Assistant Grade III, Junior Engineer, Stenographer Grade-II, Typist | ₹28,200 – ₹79,200 (AG-III) |
| Category IV | Watchman | — |
The 33,566 expected vacancies are concentrated in Categories II and III, with AG-III carrying the overwhelming majority at approximately 27,345.
Assistant Grade III — The Five Departments
AG-III is a Group C, Category III post, and candidates are recruited into one of five departments:
| Department | Function |
|---|---|
| Depot | Storage and warehousing operations — the warehousing role |
| General | Administration |
| Accounts | Financial functions |
| Technical | Technical operations, quality |
| Hindi | Official language work |
Note: sources differ on whether the Hindi department is included in every cycle — some list four departments, others five. Confirm in the notification.
“AG-III employees work in one of five departments — General, Accounts, Technical, Depot, or Hindi — handling procurement, storage, distribution, and administration of foodgrains across India’s 5 zones.”
For a candidate specifically seeking warehousing work, the department to select is Depot.
2. Eligibility
| Criterion | Detail |
|---|---|
| Qualification | Graduate degree in the relevant field for the post applied for. “Graduation is usually sufficient for eligibility” |
| Computer skills | Required — “candidates must be skilful enough with the usage of computers” |
| Typing | May help in some departments |
| Age | 18 to 27 years — upper limit 27 |
| Relaxation | Category-wise, per government norms |
| Nationality | Citizen of India, Nepal or Bhutan; Tibetan refugee settled in India before 1 January 1962; persons of Indian origin who migrated from specified countries and are now settled permanently in India |
“Because graduation is usually sufficient for eligibility, this post attracts a massive number of applicants every recruitment cycle.”
Different departments carry additional requirements — AG-III (Technical) in particular expects domain knowledge, and AG-III (Accounts) a relevant degree.
Note the age band: 27. Narrower than SSC CGL’s 30 for Inspector grades, RRB NTPC graduate’s 36, and State PSC’s 40 or 42. It is the same as SSC CGL’s Auditor and Tax Assistant bands — and it expires early.
For Category II Manager posts, the upper age limit generally falls between 28 and 35, depending on the post.
3. Pay
| Post | Pay scale | Gross |
|---|---|---|
| Assistant Grade III | ₹28,200 – ₹79,200 | Approximately ₹27,000 – ₹35,000 per month |
| Assistant Grade II | — | Approximately ₹28,000 – ₹34,000 per month |
| Manager (Category II) | ₹40,000 – ₹1,40,000 | Approximately ₹71,000 initially |
FCI follows an IDA — Industrial Dearness Allowance — pay pattern, as do NTPC, POWERGRID and BEL, covered elsewhere in this series.
Allowances: Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance, and other allowances — dress allowance, lunch allowance, children’s education allowance, entertainment allowance — up to 32% of basic salary.
For Manager posts: a starting basic of ₹40,000 during a six-month training period, with DA, House Keep Up Allowance, HRA and Grade Allowance, giving initial monthly gross emoluments of approximately ₹71,000.
A caution on figures. Sources conflict materially on the AG-III scale — one quotes ₹19,900 – ₹63,200 (a 7th CPC CDA-pattern figure), and another quotes ₹9,300 – ₹34,800, which is a superseded 6th CPC pay band. The figure quoted consistently across recent sources, and consistent with the IDA pattern, is ₹28,200 – ₹79,200. Verify in the notification.
On the 8th Pay Commission: under the expected revision — implementation likely 2026-27 — AG-III basic pay may rise to approximately ₹54,000 – ₹64,000, pushing gross toward ₹75,000 – ₹88,000. These are projections, not entitlements.
4. Selection — Phase 1 Does Not Count
| Stage | Detail |
|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Common to all candidates, irrespective of profile |
| Phase 2 | Two papers, post-specific |
| Document Verification | Originals |
Phase 1
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Questions | 100 |
| Marks | 100 — 1 mark each |
| Duration | 1 hour |
| Sectional timing | Yes |
| Language | Hindi and English — except the English Language paper |
| Negative marking | 1/4 mark per wrong answer; no penalty for unanswered |
And the provision that should govern preparation:
“The marks obtained in Phase 1 shall not be considered while preparing the final merit list, as this is a qualifying exam. Only those candidates who qualify for the Phase 1 Exam will be eligible to appear for the Phase 2 exam.”
Phase 1 is a screening filter. Its marks are discarded.
This is the standard pattern across most examinations in this series — RRB NTPC’s CBT 1, IBPS PO’s Prelims, RBI Grade B’s Phase I and NABARD’s Phase 1 all work the same way.
It is the opposite of FSSAI’s Food Safety Officer examination, covered in the previous guide, where both CBT stages count at 50:50.
Clear Phase 1 efficiently. Phase 2 is the examination.
One Syllabus Detail Worth Knowing
Phase 1’s General Studies section — “comprising of Indian History, Indian Economy, Geography & General Science” — is set up to Class 8th level, with 20 questions, alongside 5 questions on Current Affairs.
Class 8 level. Candidates preparing General Studies at UPSC or SSC CGL depth are preparing beyond what this paper tests.
5. The Zone Rule
This is the single most consequential decision in the application, and it is irreversible.
“Carefully choose ONE zone (North/South/East/West/NE) and ONE post (General/Accounts/Technical/Depot/Hindi). This cannot be changed after submission.”
“Generally, FCI recruitment allows preference for one zone.”
And the most commonly cited failure:
“Zone preference errors: FCI recruits zone-wise. Many candidates fill in the wrong zone or skip zone preference entirely — resulting in disqualification or non-preferred posting.”
Skipping the zone preference is a route to disqualification. It is not an optional field.
But Read the Transfer Clause
“Although you select a specific zone during recruitment, both FCI Assistant Grade 3 and Grade 2 employees may be posted anywhere in India based on organizational needs. While the initial posting is usually in the chosen zone, transfers across zones may occur based on demand and requirements.”
The zone determines your competing field and your initial posting. It does not guarantee your career location.
This differs from POWERGRID, covered earlier in this series, where “selected candidates are generally not entitled to inter-region transfer on request” — there, the region is effectively permanent. At FCI, cross-zone transfers occur on organisational requirement.
6. What FCI Actually Tests — And Where Candidates Lose Marks
The sources are unusually specific about this, and it is worth reproducing.
“Ignoring FCI-specific General Awareness: Questions on PDS (Public Distribution System), NFSA, MSP, food grain storage, and Food Security Act appear heavily. Generic GK is not enough.”
This is the differentiator. The Public Distribution System, the National Food Security Act, Minimum Support Price and foodgrain storage are FCI’s own business, and they carry weight in the paper. A candidate preparing generic current affairs is preparing the wrong General Awareness.
The same pattern appears across this series: RBI Grade B’s DEPR stream reads RBI’s own publications; NABARD’s ARD section is NABARD’s own function — KCC, SHG-Bank Linkage, RIDF. Read the institution before the textbook.
“Skipping Reasoning — especially Puzzles: FCI AG-3 heavily tests Puzzles and Seating Arrangement in Reasoning. Candidates who don’t practice these lose 6–8 marks easily.”
“Underestimating negative marking (0.25): Unlike BRO, FCI has negative marking. Don’t attempt questions you are unsure about.”
“Technical candidates ignoring Technical Awareness: AG-III (Technical) candidates often over-focus on general subjects and underperform in the domain-specific section.”
7. Application
The application process is completely online through the FCI website. No hard copy of the online application form is required to be sent to the Corporation.
- Go to recruitmentfci.in — reported as the official registration portal for AG-III. Always follow the link from fci.gov.in.
- Choose ONE zone — North, South, East, West or North-East — and ONE post — General, Accounts, Technical, Depot or Hindi. This cannot be changed after submission.
- Generate a temporary Registration ID and password using a valid email ID and mobile number. Keep these safe throughout the process.
- Enter personal details, educational qualifications, category and examination centre preferences.
- Upload the passport-size photograph and signature in the prescribed format.
- Pay the application fee and submit.
On the portal: “FCI AG-3 notifications sometimes go through third-party managed portals. Always follow the link from fci.gov.in” — rather than reaching a registration page through a search result or a forwarded link.
Keep scanned copies of your photograph and signature ready before starting, along with debit card, credit card or net banking details for the fee.
Status and Timing
The FCI Recruitment 2026 notification has not been released.
“At present, only the tentative vacancy details have been announced, while the detailed notification is awaited.”
Sources place it at July 2026 and August 2026. The 33,566 and 27,345 figures are tentative, and “the final vacancy count will be confirmed in the official notification.”
And an important structural note: “The FCI recruitment is done completely based on requirement. So, the recruitment process for all the posts does not happen every year.”
FCI does not run an annual cycle. Monitor fci.gov.in.
8. Documents Checklist
- ☐ Graduate degree in the relevant field
- ☐ Class 10 certificate — age proof
- ☐ Computer proficiency evidence
- ☐ Typing certificate, where the department requires it
- ☐ Caste / category certificate
- ☐ EWS certificate, where applicable
- ☐ PwBD certificate, where applicable
- ☐ Scanned photograph and signature in the prescribed format
- ☐ Registration ID and password
- ☐ Admit card and one valid photo ID for the examination
9. The Other Warehousing Employers
FCI is not the only government warehousing body, though it is by far the largest recruiter.
| Body | Note |
|---|---|
| Food Corporation of India | The principal recruiter — ~33,566 expected vacancies, 170+ depots, 5 zones |
| Central Warehousing Corporation | A separate central body with its own recruitment cycle |
| State Warehousing Corporations | State-level bodies, each recruiting independently |
Each publishes on its own portal and on its own cycle. They do not share a calendar with FCI, and a candidate targeting warehousing work should monitor the state corporation for their own state alongside fci.gov.in.
10. Assessment
In favour:
- ~33,566 expected vacancies — among the largest single government drives of 2026, with ~27,345 in AG-III alone
- Graduation in the relevant field is sufficient for AG-III
- ₹28,200 – ₹79,200 on an IDA scale, with allowances up to 32% of basic
- Five departments — a candidate can target Depot for warehousing specifically, or General/Accounts/Technical by background
- Phase 1 is qualifying only — clear it efficiently and concentrate on Phase 2
- General Studies is set at Class 8 level — narrower than SSC or UPSC preparation
- No hard copy required — fully online
- 8th Pay Commission revision expected, as upside
- Manager (Category II) at ₹40,000 basic and ₹71,000 gross for graduates targeting the officer tier
Against:
- The notification is not out — expected July–August 2026, and FCI does not recruit every year
- Age 27 for AG-III — it expires early
- One zone, one post, unchangeable — and skipping the zone preference risks disqualification
- Cross-zone transfers occur on organisational requirement — the zone is not a guarantee
- Negative marking at 0.25
- FCI-specific General Awareness — PDS, NFSA, MSP, Food Security Act — carries heavy weight, and generic GK does not cover it
- Sources conflict materially on the pay scale
- Graduation being sufficient means the field is enormous
Recommendations:
Choose the zone deliberately, and do not leave the field blank. It is irreversible, it determines your competing pool, and skipping it invites disqualification. If warehousing is the objective, select Depot.
Prepare FCI’s own subject matter. PDS, NFSA, MSP, foodgrain storage and the Food Security Act appear heavily. Generic current affairs will not carry the General Awareness section — this is the same lesson as RBI’s DEPR stream and NABARD’s ARD.
Do not over-prepare Phase 1. It is qualifying only and its marks are discarded. Phase 2 decides. And note that General Studies is tested at Class 8 level — depth beyond that is wasted.
Practise Puzzles and Seating Arrangement. They are heavily tested and are where 6 to 8 marks are commonly lost.
And register only through fci.gov.in. Notifications sometimes route through third-party managed portals; follow the link from the official site rather than a search result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What is the qualification for FCI Assistant Grade III? A graduate degree in the relevant field for the post applied for, together with computer proficiency. “Graduation is usually sufficient for eligibility.” Different departments — General, Accounts, Technical, Depot, Hindi — carry additional requirements, and typing efficiency may help in some.
Q2. What is the FCI Assistant Grade III salary? ₹28,200 – ₹79,200 on an IDA pattern pay scale, with a gross of approximately ₹27,000 – ₹35,000 per month, plus DA, HRA, Transport Allowance and other allowances up to 32% of basic salary. Sources conflict on the scale — some quote superseded or CDA-pattern figures. Verify in the notification.

Disclaimer: This article is for general information only. At the time of writing, the FCI Recruitment 2026 notification has not been released; vacancy figures of approximately 33,566 and 27,345 are tentative estimates and will be confirmed only in the official notification, expected around July–August 2026. Eligibility, age limits, pay scales, examination pattern, zone rules, fees and dates are set by the official notification and are revised each cycle; secondary sources conflict materially on the Assistant Grade III pay scale and on the number of AG-III departments. References to the 8th Pay Commission are projections. The Central Warehousing Corporation and State Warehousing Corporations recruit separately on their own cycles. Candidates must read the official notification on fci.gov.in before applying and treat it as the final authority.
