The Sports Authority of India ran two Assistant Coach recruitments in 2026. They carry the same designation and the same pay level — and they are opposite doors. One is open recruitment: 323 posts, maximum age 30, online application, a ₹2,500 fee, and selection by Computer Based Test plus a Coaching Ability Test.

The other is deputation: 100 posts, maximum age 56, applications by post through proper channel, open only to serving Central or State Government officers, and selected by interview with no written examination.
Both are Pay Level-6 — ₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400.

If you are not already in government service, only one of them exists for you. And the qualification gate for both is the same: a Diploma in Coaching from SAI NS-NIS, Patiala — or an elite sporting record that substitutes for it.

1. The Qualification — Four Doors
Both recruitments accept the same four options:

The Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NS NIS), Patiala is “the primary academic and training hub for SAI coaches.” Its diploma is the standard route.
But Options B and C matter enormously, and they are the reason this recruitment is different from every other in this series.
An Olympian, Paralympian, Asian Games or World Championship participant qualifies without the NIS diploma — provided they hold a certificate course in coaching. A Dronacharya Awardee qualifies outright.
SAI also operates a “Sports Quota” and “Champion Athlete” scheme where Olympic or International medalists are eligible for direct recruitment as Coaches.
This is a profession where the sporting record substitutes for the academic qualification. No other recruitment covered in this series does that.
A caution on Option D: “Officers who joined government service through sports quota without a formal coaching diploma should check carefully whether they qualify under the SAI sports quota definition.” Option D is defined by SAI’s governing body, not by the candidate.

Note the relaxation for SAI contractual employees: “equivalent to service duration.” A candidate who has worked for SAI on contract gets their entire service period added to the age limit. For someone who has spent five years as a contractual coach, the ceiling moves from 30 to 35.
Note also the fee: women pay ₹2,000, not nil. Some sources state that “for most online applications, there is no fee for SC/ST/Women candidates” — that general statement does not hold for this notification. Check the specific advertisement.
The Application Reopened
The original window ran 1 February to 15 February 2026.
It was then reopened: 23 March 2026 (10:00 AM) to 21 April 2026 (05:00 PM).
A closed window is not always final. This is the second instance documented in this series — the IAF Agniveer Vayu 01/2027 window also closed and reopened. Candidates who assume a missed deadline is permanent occasionally miss a reopening.
3. The Selection — Where the Practical Test Outweighs the Written One

Why the Weighting Matters
Across this entire series, the written test dominates and the practical test is qualifying only.
DRDO CEPTAM’s Trade Test is qualifying. NTPC’s trade and skill tests are “only qualifying in nature.” POWERGRID’s Trade Test is qualifying, with the CBT carrying 100% of merit. RRB’s typing test adds nothing.
SAI inverts it. The Coaching Ability Test carries 60% — more than the written examination.
A candidate who scores well in the CBT and cannot demonstrate coaching ability will not be selected. The written test is the smaller half.

Read that composition. 90 of 100 marks are your own subject — 65 on your sport, 25 on sports science. Only 10 marks are general aptitude.
This is the most subject-weighted paper covered in this series. SSC CGL, RRB NTPC and the banking examinations are dominated by reasoning, quantitative aptitude and general awareness. SAI tests coaching.
For a candidate with an NIS diploma and real sporting knowledge, that is favourable. For a general aspirant, there is nothing to fall back on.

The Application — And Its Real Barrier
“Eligible candidates must submit applications through proper channel (Cadre Controlling Authority). This is not an online application; apply via post.”
Requirements:
- Download the prescribed application format (Annexure-I / CV Proforma) from sportsauthorityofindia.nic.in
- Attach attested copies of certificates for age, qualifications and experience
- “Enclose the last 5 years’ ACRs/APARs duly attested on each page by an officer of Under Secretary rank or above”
That last requirement is the real barrier. Five years of Annual Confidential Reports, attested on every page, by an officer of Under Secretary rank or above — and the whole application routed through your Cadre Controlling Authority. It takes weeks, and it requires your department’s cooperation.
“Ensure your application reaches the destination on or before 27.06.2026 by 5:00 PM.” A postal deadline is a receipt deadline.
The Honest Assessment
One source is unusually candid, and it is worth reproducing:
“The ROI here is professional fulfilment in sports, not a salary jump.”
“Level-6 pay is adequate for a mid-career government officer, though not a raise over most analogous posts. Officers already drawing Level-6 or above will essentially move laterally.”
“Age limit of 56 years is lenient, making senior officers with long government service eligible.”

The deputation route is a lateral move for a serving officer who wants to work in sport. It is not a promotion, and it is not open to the general public.

The 452-post internship programme spans MYAS, SAI, NADA and NDTL — and the Legal, IT and Media streams are open to candidates with no sports background at all.
NDTL wants M.Sc Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Forensic Science or M.Pharm — a route for science postgraduates into a national laboratory.
And Junior Engineer posts may use GATE scores — the same instrument covered in our DRDO, NTPC and POWERGRID guides.
On contractual terms: “Most contractual positions, like Young Professionals and Coaches, are initially for 1 to 2 years, extendable up to 5 years based on performance.”

Established in 1984 to carry forward the legacy of the IXth Asian Games held in New Delhi in 1982, SAI functions under the Department of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, and is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.

Recommendations:
If you hold an NS-NIS Patiala diploma and are under 30, the direct route is yours — 323 permanent Level-6 posts, with 90% of the written paper on your own subject.
If you have represented India at the Olympics, Paralympics, Asian Games or a World Championship, get the coaching certificate. Option B removes the diploma requirement entirely. A Dronacharya Award removes it outright.
Prepare the Coaching Ability Test, not the CBT. It carries 60% — more than the written examination. This is the reverse of DRDO, NTPC and POWERGRID, where the practical test is qualifying only and the written test decides everything.
If you are a serving government officer at Level-5 with six years’ service and a coaching background, the deputation route exists — but start the ACR paperwork now. Five years of reports, attested on every page by an Under Secretary or above, routed through your Cadre Controlling Authority, to arrive by a fixed date.
And if you hold a Masters in sports science, physiotherapy, nutrition, psychology or biomechanics, look at Performance Analyst — 48 posts at the same Level-6 pay, with experience desirable but not mandatory.
