Railway Ticket Collector Recruitment 2026: Eligibility, Selection Process and Application Process

Candidates searching for Railway Ticket Collector recruitment should begin with a clarification that determines where to apply.

The Railway Recruitment Board does not conduct a standalone “Ticket Collector” recruitment. The post that performs ticketing and passenger-facing commercial work, and which candidates commonly mean by TC, is the Commercial cum Ticket Clerk (CCTC), recruited under the RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) examination at the undergraduate level.

It is a Class 12 post, it sits at Pay Level 3 with a basic of ₹21,700, and the 2026 drive carried 2,424 vacancies — making it the highest-paid undergraduate post in the entire NTPC structure.

1. The Undergraduate Posts and What They Pay

RRB NTPC recruits at two levels. Only the undergraduate tier is open on Class 12.

PostPay LevelBasic PayTier
Junior Clerk cum TypistLevel-2₹19,90012th pass
Accounts Clerk cum TypistLevel-2₹19,90012th pass
Junior Time KeeperLevel-2₹19,90012th pass
Trains ClerkLevel-2₹19,90012th pass
Commercial cum Ticket ClerkLevel-3₹21,70012th pass
Traffic AssistantLevel-4₹25,500Graduate
Goods Guard / Goods Train ManagerLevel-5₹29,200Graduate
Senior Commercial cum Ticket ClerkLevel-5₹29,200Graduate
Senior Clerk cum TypistLevel-5₹29,200Graduate
Junior Account Assistant cum TypistLevel-5₹29,200Graduate
Senior Time KeeperLevel-5₹29,200Graduate
Commercial ApprenticeLevel-6₹35,400Graduate
Station MasterLevel-6₹35,400Graduate

Two conclusions for a Class 12 candidate.

CCTC is the best undergraduate post on pay. At Level-3 and ₹21,700, it sits ₹1,800 above the four Level-2 posts, and it is the only UG post above Level-2. Since DA, HRA, NPS contribution, gratuity and pension all compute on basic, that differential compounds across a career.

Station Master and Goods Guard are not available. They are Level-5 and Level-6 graduate posts requiring a bachelor’s degree. A Class 12 candidate cannot apply, and any listing suggesting otherwise is mistaken. The realistic route is to enter at the UG level and target the graduate posts in a future cycle after completing a degree.

What a CCTC Actually Does

Posted at booking offices and railway stations, handling ticketing and commercial duties — issuing and checking tickets, passenger services, customer queries and associated administrative work. It is a frontline, public-facing role.

2. Eligibility

CriterionDetail
QualificationClass 12 (Intermediate) pass from any recognised Board or equivalent. Class 10 alone is not sufficient
Higher qualificationsITI, Diploma, Graduation and B.Tech holders are also eligible — the requirement is a minimum, not a ceiling
Age18 to 30 years for UG posts, with a 3-year one-time relaxation currently provided, effectively taking the upper limit to 33 for Unreserved and EWS candidates
Reference dateCalculated as on the date specified in the notification — typically 1 January or 1 July of the notification year
Category relaxationAs per Railway Board norms

On final-year candidates: reports indicate that candidates in their final year may apply but must produce the original certificate at the time of joining. Practice has varied between cycles, and candidates in this position should verify the clause in the notification rather than rely on secondary guidance.

On multiple zones: candidates may apply to multiple RRB zones for these posts — unlike Group D, where applications were restricted to a single zone. The multi-zone rules for the current cycle should be confirmed in the notification, as they have changed between cycles.

3. Salary and Benefits

ComponentDetail
Basic Pay₹21,700, Pay Level-3
Dearness AllowanceReported in the range of 50% to 55%, revised twice yearly — January and July — against the All India Consumer Price Index
House Rent AllowanceBy city classification — X, Y or Z
Transport AllowanceBy city of posting
In-handApproximately ₹32,000 – ₹38,000, depending on posting location

Deductions: NPS is the largest component, alongside income tax — which is minimal or nil at this income level.

Non-salary benefits, which are substantial in Indian Railways:

  • Travel passes — a benefit unique to railway employment and of real annual value
  • Medical coverage and reimbursements
  • Railway quarters — departmental accommodation
  • Pension under NPS
  • Annual increment at approximately 3%
  • Educational assistance

On DA figures: sources report DA at 50%, 53% and 55% for 2026. DA is revised twice yearly and the applicable rate should be taken from the current Railway Board order rather than from any secondary listing.

Promotion

Commercial cum Ticket Clerk → Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk (Level-5, ₹29,200) → Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor

Progression is through departmental promotion and seniority. Note that Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk is a graduate-entry post at Level-5 in direct recruitment — but is reachable departmentally from CCTC. As with several posts covered in this series, the departmental route reaches grades that direct recruitment gates behind a degree.

4. Selection Process

StageDetail
1. CBT 1Screening. Common to all posts. Marks are normalised
2. CBT 2Common to all posts. 90 minutes, three sections
3. Typing Skill TestNot applicable to CCTC
4. Document VerificationOriginals
5. Medical ExaminationPer Railway Board standards for the post

CBT 1

A screening stage. Marks are normalised across shifts and used to shortlist for CBT 2.

Shortlisting for CBT 2 is done at 20 times the number of vacancies, on CBT 1 merit.

CBT 2

Three sections — General Awareness, Mathematics, and General Intelligence and Reasoning — over 90 minutes.

Negative marking is 1/3 of a mark per incorrect answer. Guessing carries a real cost; three errors negate one correct answer.

The Typing Test — A Point in CCTC’s Favour

There is no typing skill test for Commercial cum Ticket Clerk or Trains Clerk. Selection rests on CBT 1, CBT 2, document verification and the medical examination.

The typing test applies to Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Time Keeper and the corresponding senior posts, at 30 wpm in English or 25 wpm in Hindi. It is qualifying only — marks are not added to the final merit.

This matters when setting preferences. A candidate who is uncertain about typing speed avoids that risk entirely by preferring CCTC — which also happens to be the highest-paid UG post. For candidates targeting the typist posts, the practical advice is to aim for 35 wpm English or 28 wpm Hindi in practice, to hold a comfortable buffer above the requirement.

CBAT — the Computer Based Aptitude Test — applies to Station Master and Traffic Assistant, both graduate posts. It is not required for undergraduate posts.

Medical Standards

Conducted per the Railway Board standards prescribed for each post. Colour vision, hearing and physical fitness are assessed. Medical categories — A1, A3, B1, C1 and others — vary by post; A3 is reported for ticket-collecting posts. The applicable category is stated in the notification.

Colour vision deserves attention. It cannot be trained for and is discovered at the medical stage by candidates who have never been tested. A private test in advance costs little.

5. Vacancy Position — An Honest Note

CycleTotal NTPC vacancies
2019More than 35,000
Previous cycle11,558 — 8,113 graduate, 3,445 UG
20268,8685,810 graduate, 3,058 UG

The trend is downward. The 2026 figure is approximately 2,690 fewer than the preceding cycle, and a fraction of the 2019 drive.

Within the 2026 UG allocation of 3,058, the CCTC post carries 2,424 — the overwhelming majority of undergraduate vacancies.

Candidates should plan on this basis: competition at the UG level is intense and the vacancy pool is contracting. Applying to multiple zones where permitted, and preferring CCTC where it carries the bulk of UG posts, are both rational responses.

Some listings quote 8,000 to 11,000 expected “RRB TC” vacancies. These are estimates extrapolated from previous cycles, not notified figures. The official zone-wise and category-wise vacancy is declared in the notification PDF.

6. Application Procedure

  1. Access the official RRB application portal — rrbapply.gov.in.
  2. Register and complete the application when the CEN for the undergraduate level is live.
  3. Complete personal and educational particulars.
  4. Select exam city preferences and post preferences carefully.
  5. Apply to multiple zones where the notification permits.
  6. Upload documents to specification.
  7. Pay the fee and submit.
  8. Retain the printed application.

Read the official notification in full before applying. Eligibility conditions, exam city preferences, document requirements and post preferences must be entered correctly at registration. A single error can result in rejection, and being found ineligible at any stage — including after the final result — leads to disqualification.

7. Documents Checklist

  • Class 12 mark sheet and certificate
  • Class 10 mark sheet — age proof
  • Caste / category certificate, where applicable
  • EWS certificate, where applicable
  • Identity proof
  • ☐ Passport-size photographs
  • ITI / Diploma / Degree certificate, where held
  • ☐ Printed application and admit card

Any discrepancy found during document verification leads to disqualification. Particulars entered in the application must match the certificates exactly.

8. Assessment

Commercial cum Ticket Clerk is the strongest undergraduate post in RRB NTPC, for four reasons:

It is the highest-paid UG postLevel-3, ₹21,700, against ₹19,900 for every other undergraduate post.

It carries the bulk of UG vacancies2,424 of 3,058 in the 2026 cycle.

There is no typing test, removing a stage that eliminates candidates in the typist posts.

The benefits are substantialtravel passes, railway quarters, medical coverage and NPS pension, on top of an in-hand of approximately ₹32,000 – ₹38,000.

The honest constraints: the vacancy pool is contracting cycle on cycle; 1/3 negative marking in CBT 2 penalises guessing; colour vision and medical standards eliminate candidates who never tested; and the post is public-facing shift work, not a desk role.

Recommendation: prefer CCTC at the UG level for the pay, the vacancy volume and the absence of a typing test. Apply to multiple zones where permitted. Get a colour vision test before applying. And if graduation is achievable, note that the Level-5 and Level-6 posts — Senior CCTC, Goods Train Manager, Station Master at ₹35,400 — open up in a future cycle, or departmentally from within.
