NTPC Limited — established in 1975, India’s largest power generation company and a Maharatna CPSE — states its recruitment structure plainly on its own careers page, and the wording matters:
“In order to cater to the need of non-executive manpower on a long term basis, NTPC inducts fresh Diploma holders and ITI holders in various disciplines in the name of Diploma/Supervisory Trainee and Artisan Trainee respectively.”
Those are the post names. A diploma holder enters as a Diploma/Supervisory Trainee; an ITI holder as an Artisan Trainee. Both are non-executive cadre.

The executive tier is separate and gated by GATE. Engineering Executive Trainee requires a B.E./B.Tech and a valid GATE 2025 score — NTPC conducts no written test of its own for it.
For an ITI or diploma holder, the GATE route is closed and irrelevant. The non-executive route is written-test based, and it leads to regularisation after one year.

1. The Non-Executive Route — In NTPC’s Own Words
NTPC’s recruitment page describes the process precisely:
“The selection method primarily comprises of written tests (online/offline), followed by physical/trade/skill test, which are only qualifying in nature. Before regularization, these trainees are put through a one-year training programme, to make them aware of organization’s culture and prepare them to take up their roles.”
Three things follow from that sentence, and each matters.
First: the written test decides. The trade and skill tests are “only qualifying in nature” — they must be cleared, but they do not add to the merit.
This is the same structure as DRDO CEPTAM Technician-A, where the CBT is the Selection Test and the Trade Test is qualifying. And as with DRDO, “qualifying” does not mean unimportant — a qualifying stage that is failed ends the candidature regardless of the written score.
Second: there is a one-year training programme before regularisation. The trainee is not a regular employee on day one. Regularisation follows the training year.
Third: the tests may be online or offline. NTPC specifies “written tests (online/offline)” — the mode is not fixed.
The Irregular Cycle
NTPC adds: “In addition, certain recruitment drives are also carried out at different non-executive levels from time to time on need basis or on exceptional grounds.”
The non-executive notifications do not follow a fixed annual calendar. Unlike Engineering Executive Trainee — which NTPC states it “has been hiring every year, since its inception” — Diploma/Supervisory Trainee and Artisan Trainee drives are issued on need.
Monitor careers.ntpc.co.in and ntpc.co.in/jobs-ntpc directly. These notifications will not appear on a predictable schedule.
2. The Executive Tier — And Why It Is Closed to You
Engineering Executive Trainee (EET) 2026 carried 515 vacancies, with registration from 11 February to 25 February 2026.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Qualification | B.E./B.Tech in a related field, full-time, from a recognised university |
| GATE | A valid GATE 2025 score is required |
| Old GATE scores | Not accepted |
| Paper | Candidates must have appeared in GATE-2025 in the corresponding engineering paper only |
| Disciplines | Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics/Instrumentation, Computer Science/IT |
| Written test | None — NTPC conducts no separate CBT for EET |
| Selection | GATE 2025 score → Interview / GD (where conducted) → Document verification → Medical → Final merit |
| Grade | E1 — ₹40,000 – ₹1,40,000 |
| Age | Up to 27 for General, with relaxation |
“NTPC does not have a separate written examination… Selection is through GATE 2025.”
This is the structural difference. An ITI or diploma holder cannot enter the executive cadre through this route — it requires a B.E./B.Tech and a current-year GATE score.
The non-executive route requires neither. It has its own written test, and that test is NTPC’s.
The Service Bond — Read Before Applying
EET carries a service bond, and the amounts are substantial:
| Category | Bond |
|---|---|
| General / EWS / OBC | ₹5,00,000 |
| SC / ST / PwBD | ₹2,50,000 |
Duration: 3 years after successful completion of training. If the candidate leaves before completion, the bond amount becomes payable to the organisation.
No comparable bond is reported for the non-executive trainee route — but candidates should verify the position in any Diploma or Artisan Trainee notification, since bond conditions are notification-specific.
After Training
Executive Trainees are promoted to Assistant Manager after training completion. Progression continues to Senior Manager, AGM and higher executive positions through internal evaluation and performance.
Training performance directly impacts final placement and department allocation.
3. Pay — And the Provision That Distinguishes NTPC
NTPC follows the IDA — Industrial Dearness Allowance — pay pattern.
“DA is revised every quarter based on the All India Consumer Price Index.”
This is materially different from every central government post covered in this series. Under the 7th CPC, Dearness Allowance is revised twice a year — January and July. NTPC revises it four times a year.
In an inflationary period, a quarterly DA revision compounds faster than a half-yearly one. It is a genuine structural advantage of PSU IDA pay over central government CDA pay, and it does not appear in any headline salary comparison.
Benefits
| Benefit | Detail |
|---|---|
| Township accommodation | Provided |
| Medical | Free medical care for employees and dependents |
| Performance-Linked Pay (PLP) | A robust system |
| Leave Travel Concession (LTC) | Provided |
| Career growth | Structured, through promotions and MACP |
NTPC operates power stations, regional headquarters and subsidiaries across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and other states.
And the growth trajectory is documented: NTPC is targeting 149 GW of total installed capacity by 2032, a major portion through renewable energy — which implies sustained demand for technical manpower across coal, gas, hydro, solar and renewables.
Maharatna CPSE status — the highest category granted to a public sector undertaking — gives NTPC near-autonomy in major investment decisions, and with it greater financial stability for employees.
4. The Wider NTPC Landscape
For context, the posts NTPC has notified during 2026 — none of which are ITI or diploma entry:
| Post | Vacancies | Qualification | Pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering Executive Trainee | 515 | B.E./B.Tech + GATE 2025 | E1 — ₹40,000 – ₹1,40,000 |
| Assistant Executive | 250 | B.E./B.Tech (Mech/Electrical), 40% marks, 1 year experience in a power plant of 40 MW or more | Fixed consolidated ₹55,000 per month |
| Engineer (Contracts & Materials) | 25 | B.E./B.Tech + 4 years post-qualification experience | E2/IDA — ₹50,000 – ₹1,60,000; in-hand ₹75,000 – ₹95,000+ |
| Executive (International Business Development) | 4 | Engineering or management + experience | Consolidated ₹1,25,000 per month |
| Assistant Chemist Trainee | — | Chemistry | Executive scheme |
Note the Assistant Executive structure: a fixed consolidated ₹55,000 per month — not a pay scale. Its written exam carries 200 questions across Technical Knowledge, General Awareness and Reasoning, followed by Interview and Document Verification.
The point of the table is what is absent from it. Through 2026, NTPC’s notified drives have been executive-tier and experience-gated. The Diploma/Supervisory Trainee and Artisan Trainee drives are the ones an ITI or diploma holder waits for — and they come “on need basis”.
5. Application
Applications are made online through the NTPC careers portal — careers.ntpc.co.in.
- Visit ntpc.co.in and open the Careers / Jobs section.
- Open the relevant recruitment notification.
- Register with a valid email ID and mobile number.
- Complete the form — personal details, qualification details, experience and category.
- Upload photograph, signature, educational certificates, experience certificates and category certificate.
- Pay the fee and submit.
The Fee — And Two Provisions
Online: Net Banking, Debit Card or Credit Card, directly through the online application form at careers.ntpc.co.in.
Offline — SBI only: generate a pay-in-slip from the application portal and deposit the fee at your nearest State Bank of India branch into the designated account. Collect your unique Journal Number and Branch Code — you will need these to complete your online application.
The offline SBI route is unusual among the recruiters covered in this series, almost all of which are online-only. If online payment fails, there is a fallback.
“Fees once paid are non-refundable under any circumstances.”
And the exemption: female candidates are exempt from paying the application fee, regardless of their category — alongside SC/ST/PwBD/Ex-Servicemen.
This is the same provision seen at DRDO — RAC and CEPTAM both exempt women of all categories. It is worth knowing, because most recruiters exempt only reserved categories.
6. Medical
All selected candidates must clear a medical examination conducted by the NTPC Medical Board.
“Candidates should be in good physical and mental health suitable for industrial working conditions. Medical tests will be conducted at authorised hospitals. Final joining is allowed only after medical clearance.”
NTPC power stations operate in industrial plant environments with strict safety standards. The work spans operations, maintenance, planning and technical supervision, and both office-based and field assignments are part of the job profile.
7. Documents Checklist
- ☐ ITI certificate — for Artisan Trainee
- ☐ Diploma in the relevant discipline — for Diploma/Supervisory Trainee
- ☐ B.E./B.Tech and GATE scorecard — for Engineering Executive Trainee only
- ☐ Class 10 certificate — age proof
- ☐ Caste / category certificate
- ☐ EWS certificate, where applicable
- ☐ PwBD certificate, where applicable
- ☐ Experience certificates, where the post requires them
- ☐ Journal Number and Branch Code — if paying offline through SBI
- ☐ Photograph, signature and printed application
8. Assessment
In favour, for an ITI or diploma holder:
- NTPC recruits ITI and diploma holders as a matter of standing policy — Artisan Trainee and Diploma/Supervisory Trainee are named cadres, not ad-hoc engagements
- “Long term basis” — NTPC’s own description of the non-executive manpower requirement
- No GATE required — the executive route’s gate does not apply
- The written test is NTPC’s own, not a borrowed national score
- Trade and skill tests are qualifying only — the written test decides
- Regularisation after one year — these lead to permanent employment
- IDA pay with quarterly DA revision — four revisions a year against the central government’s two
- Township accommodation, free medical for dependents, PLP, LTC, MACP
- Maharatna CPSE, targeting 149 GW by 2032 with a major renewable component
- Female candidates are fee-exempt regardless of category
Against:
- The non-executive drives are issued “on need basis” — no fixed annual cycle, and none notified through 2026 at the time of writing
- NTPC’s 2026 notifications have been executive-tier and experience-gated — EET, Assistant Executive, Engineer (Contracts & Materials)
- The qualifying trade/skill test can still eliminate a candidate who has cleared the written test
- One year of training before regularisation
- All-India posting — location decided by operational requirement
- Fees are non-refundable
Recommendations:
Watch ntpc.co.in/jobs-ntpc directly. The Diploma/Supervisory Trainee and Artisan Trainee notifications are the ones that concern you, they are issued on need, and they will not appear on a schedule. NTPC publishes its advertisement numbers on that page — Advt No. 09/26 for Assistant Chemist Trainee, 05/2026 for Assistant Executive, 03/26 for Executive (IBD) — and the non-executive drives appear the same way.
Prepare the written test, and practise the trade. The written test is the selection instrument. The trade or skill test is qualifying — clearing it is mandatory, and marks above the threshold buy nothing.
And if you are weighing a diploma against an ITI, note the pattern across this series: at RRB, the ITI carries the volume; at DRDO, the diploma carries both pay and volume; at NTPC, both have their own named cadre — Artisan Trainee and Diploma/Supervisory Trainee — with the diploma at the supervisory level.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Does NTPC recruit ITI and diploma holders? Yes. NTPC states that it “inducts fresh Diploma holders and ITI holders in various disciplines in the name of Diploma/Supervisory Trainee and Artisan Trainee respectively” to meet non-executive manpower requirements on a long-term basis.
Q2. Is GATE required? Not for the non-executive route. GATE is required only for Engineering Executive Trainee, which needs a B.E./B.Tech and a valid GATE 2025 score — old GATE scores are not accepted, and the candidate must have appeared in the corresponding engineering paper. Artisan Trainee and Diploma/Supervisory Trainee are selected through NTPC’s own written test.
Q3. How are Artisan and Diploma Trainees selected? “Written tests (online/offline), followed by physical/trade/skill test, which are only qualifying in nature.” The written test decides the merit; the trade or skill test must be cleared but adds nothing to it. Trainees then undergo a one-year training programme before regularisation.
Q4. What is the NTPC Engineering Executive Trainee salary? E1 Grade — ₹40,000 to ₹1,40,000 per month, plus allowances and benefits. After training, Executive Trainees are designated Assistant Manager.
Q5. Is there a service bond? For Engineering Executive Trainee, yes — ₹5,00,000 for General/EWS/OBC candidates and ₹2,50,000 for SC/ST/PwBD, for 3 years after successful completion of training. If the candidate leaves before completion, the bond becomes payable. Verify the position for any non-executive notification separately.
Q6. How does NTPC’s DA work? NTPC follows the IDA — Industrial Dearness Allowance — pay pattern, under which DA is revised every quarter based on the All India Consumer Price Index. Central government posts under the 7th CPC revise DA twice a year.
Q7. Is there a fee exemption? Female candidates are exempt from the application fee regardless of their category, alongside SC/ST/PwBD/Ex-Servicemen. Fees once paid are non-refundable under any circumstances. Payment may be made online or offline at a State Bank of India branch, using a pay-in-slip generated from the portal.
Q8. When is the next Artisan or Diploma Trainee notification? There is no fixed cycle. NTPC states that non-executive recruitment drives are “carried out at different non-executive levels from time to time on need basis or on exceptional grounds” — unlike Engineering Executive Trainee, which NTPC has hired every year since its inception. Monitor ntpc.co.in/jobs-ntpc.
Disclaimer: This article is for general information only. NTPC’s non-executive recruitment for Diploma/Supervisory Trainee and Artisan Trainee is conducted on a need basis without a fixed annual calendar; at the time of writing, NTPC’s 2026 notifications have been executive-tier. Vacancy numbers, eligibility, pay, bond conditions, selection stages, fees and dates are set by each official notification and vary by drive. Candidates must read the official notification on ntpc.co.in or careers.ntpc.co.in before applying and treat it as the final authority.
