UGC NET makes you eligible. It does not employ you. The recruitment is separate, and it is conducted institution by institution — by State Public Service Commissions, State University Service Commissions, Central and State universities, IITs, AIIMS and individual colleges, each on its own cycle with its own notification.

That fragmentation conceals something candidates need to see clearly. Three live 2026 notifications carry the identical designation “Assistant Professor” — and they are three entirely different jobs:
| Recruitment | Posts | Nature | Pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| MPPSC (Madhya Pradesh) | 949 | Permanent, Gazetted | Academic Level 10 — in-hand ~₹91,500–₹96,600 |
| HPPSC (Himachal Pradesh) | 369 | Job Trainee scheme | Fixed ₹35,000/month |
| BSUSC (Bihar) | 3,687 | Contractual, one session | Entry-level Assistant Professor gross (Basic + DA) |
Same qualification. Same designation. A pay difference of nearly three times.

This guide sets out the UGC eligibility that underpins all of them, what each model actually offers, and how to read a notification before applying.
Overview
| Point | Detail |
|---|---|
| Recruiters | State PSCs, State University Service Commissions, Central and State universities, IITs, AIIMS, individual colleges |
| Qualification | Master’s degree with 55% (50% reserved) + NET/SET/SLET or qualifying PhD |
| Regular pay | Academic Level 10, entry ₹57,700, scale to ₹1,82,400 |
| In-hand (Level 10) | Approximately ₹91,500 – ₹96,600 at 60% DA (January 2026) |
| Age | 21 to 40 (MPPSC) · 18 to 45 (HPPSC) — set by each recruiter |
| Selection | Written exam, or academic score plus interview — varies by recruiter |
| Promotion | Assistant Professor (L10) → Associate Professor (L13A) → Professor (L14) |
1. The Eligibility — UGC Norms
Eligibility across recruiters is generally based on University Grants Commission regulations, and is consistent even where everything else differs.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Degree | Master’s degree in the relevant subject |
| Marks | 55% — 50% for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwBD |
| Eligibility test | A pass in UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, SET or SLET |
| Alternative | A PhD awarded under the UGC rules that exempt NET |
| Institution | Qualifications must be from recognised institutions in India or abroad |
Note that CSIR-NET is accepted alongside UGC-NET — relevant for science candidates, and the subject of the next guide in this series.
The PhD Exemption Is Not Automatic
This is the provision candidates most often assume incorrectly, and one recruiter states the conditions explicitly.
PhD holders are exempted from NET/SLET/SET only if the PhD was awarded in regular mode with:
- External examiners
- An open viva-voce
- At least two published research papers — one in a refereed journal
- Two conference presentations from the PhD work
A PhD that does not meet all four conditions does not exempt the holder from NET. Candidates relying on the exemption should verify their PhD against these criteria — and against the specific notification’s wording — before applying.
Where the PhD does not qualify, NET/SET/SLET remains mandatory.
The cut-off date for qualification is generally the last date of application, or as specified in the individual subject notification.
2. The Three Models — Read the Notification, Not the Designation
Model One — Permanent, Academic Level 10
MPPSC Assistant Professor 2026 is the benchmark.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Vacancies | 949 across many subjects |
| Nature | Permanent, Gazetted Second Class, under the Higher Education Department |
| Pay | UGC Academic Pay Scale, Level 10, entry ₹57,700 |
| In-hand | Approximately ₹91,500 – ₹96,600 at entry, with DA at 60% (January 2026) plus HRA, by city class |
| Age | 21 to 40 as on 1 January 2026, relaxation per MP rules |
| Selection | Offline, OMR-based subject paper |
| Portal | mppsc.mp.gov.in via MP Online |
This is what “government college lecturer” should mean — permanent, gazetted, on the UGC academic scale, with pension and the full promotion ladder.
Note the subject-wise structure. MPPSC ran different application windows for different subjects, and a corrigendum dated 25 June 2026 revised dates for History, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Mathematics, placing them on a common schedule separate from Zoology and Computer Science. Subject-wise exam dates run from 12 July into August 2026, and the exact date is printed on the admit card.
The lesson: in a multi-subject drive, your subject has its own calendar. Track the advertisement number for your subject, not the drive as a whole.
Model Two — Job Trainee, Fixed Pay
HPPSC Assistant Professor (College Cadre) 2026.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Vacancies | 369 across 22 subjects |
| Structure | 22 separate but parallel advertisements (Advt. Nos. 34/6-2026 to 55/6-2026) |
| Nature | Job Trainee scheme, Department of Higher Education |
| Pay | Fixed ₹35,000 per month |
| Age | 18 to 45 as on 1 January 2026 |
| Application | 17 June to 14 July 2026, through the HPPSC One Time Registration (OTR) portal |
| Fee | ₹600 |
| Selection | Screening Test + Subject Aptitude Test + Personality Test |
The pay is the point. ₹35,000 fixed — against ₹91,500 – ₹96,600 in-hand for a Level 10 post in Madhya Pradesh. The fixed-pay Job Trainee structure means pay and benefits differ from regular Level-10 Assistant Professor scales in many other states.
The selection also differs. It uses a two-paper written test plus a personality test — including a descriptive Subject Aptitude Test of 120 marks — rather than pure NET-based shortlisting.
The age band is the compensation: 18 to 45, wider than MPPSC’s 40.
Model Three — Contractual, Academic Score
BSUSC Bihar Contractual Faculty 2026 — Bihar’s largest faculty drive in recent years.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Vacancies | 3,687 across 6 subjects — Hindi, English, History, Economics, Political Science, Sociology |
| Institutions | 10 Bihar universities and new Rajkiya Degree Colleges |
| Nature | Purely contractual — one academic session, with annual renewal based on performance and screening |
| Pay | Matches the minimum gross salary of a regular Assistant Professor at entry level (Basic + DA) |
| Application | 3 to 15 July 2026 — a 12-day window |
| Fee | Nil |
| Selection | Academic Score (88 marks) + Interview-cum-teaching demonstration (12 marks) — no written exam |
This model rewards a different candidate entirely. With 88 of 100 marks on academic record, it favours candidates with strong marksheets and research credentials over pure exam performers.
The practical instruction is precise: calculate your exact academic score out of 88 before applying — that figure decides shortlisting.
Who it suits: NET/SET or PhD holders with above-average Master’s and Graduation percentages, willing to accept a contractual one-session role with annual renewal.
Who should skip it: fresh Master’s graduates without NET or PhD, and anyone expecting immediate permanent security and full pension benefits.
3. Salary — Academic Level 10 in Detail
| Component | Detail |
|---|---|
| Pay Level | Academic Level 10, 7th Pay Commission |
| Entry pay | ₹57,700 |
| Scale | ₹57,700 – ₹1,82,400 |
| Dearness Allowance | 60% as of January 2026 |
| Plus | HRA by city class (X/Y/Z), TA, medical benefits, provident fund |
| In-hand at entry | Approximately ₹91,500 – ₹96,600, depending on HRA class |
Other reported ranges: ₹75,000 to ₹1,50,000 including DA, HRA and TA; and ₹80,000 to ₹1,00,000+ for a fresh recruit in metropolitan cities. The spread reflects city class and DA rate.
Context across this series: an entry in-hand of approximately ₹91,500 – ₹96,600 places a Level 10 Assistant Professor above IBPS PO (~₹74,000–76,000), above SSC CGL Income Tax Inspector (~₹75,000–80,000), and below RBI Grade B (~₹1,54,936) and LIC AAO (~₹1,26,000).
Salary is not uniform across institutions. It depends on whether the post is in a central university, state university, deemed university or private college — each follows different pay rules and allowance structures. Private institutions range widely, reported at ₹40,000 to ₹1,20,000+ depending on reputation and location.
Promotion
Assistant Professor (Level 10) → Senior Assistant Professor → Associate Professor (Level 13A) → Professor (Level 14)
Professor requires a PhD and the prescribed years as Assistant or Associate Professor.
Progression depends on research papers, teaching experience, the PhD degree and academic performance — not on seniority alone.
4. The Job
- Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Conducting research and publishing papers
- Supervising student projects and dissertations
- Participating in academic administration
Research output is not optional. It drives promotion to Associate Professor and Professor, and in academic-score-based recruitments like BSUSC’s, it drives selection itself.
5. Where the Vacancies Appear
There is no single portal. This is the practical core of the guide.
| Source | What |
|---|---|
| State Public Service Commissions | MPPSC, HPPSC, UPPSC, MPSC and equivalents — the permanent, Level 10 college cadre posts |
| State University Service Commissions | BSUSC and equivalents — university and contractual faculty |
| Central university career pages | Institution-specific notifications |
| State university career pages | Institution-specific |
| IITs, AIIMS, IIMs | Own recruitment — for example, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, 30 Assistant Professor (Grade I/II) posts |
| Individual college websites | Single-post notifications, often offline |
| UGC | Regulations and norms |
Recruitment is a continuous process, with notifications issued throughout the year rather than on an annual cycle.
Emerging-field demand is reported in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Renewable Energy and specialised medical sciences — worth noting for candidates choosing a PhD area.
The instruction: monitor your state’s PSC, your state’s university service commission, and the career pages of institutions you would actually join. A single-post college notification will never appear on a national aggregator, and windows are short — BSUSC’s ran 12 days.
6. Application
The process differs by recruiter. Using MPPSC as the model:
- Open the state portal — mppsc.mp.gov.in, linked to the MP Online application portal.
- Register or log in and fill the Assistant Professor form for your subject.
- Upload photograph, signature and required certificates.
- Pay the fee before the subject-specific deadline.
- Submit and keep a printout of the final form.
- Download the admit card — MPPSC’s was expected from 2 July 2026 on the MP Online portal.
For HPPSC, applications run through the One Time Registration (OTR) portal. For BSUSC, through the Higher Education Department’s Samarth portal.
Read the notification thoroughly before applying to avoid disqualification at later stages. Candidates must fulfil the academic and age criteria as of the closing date of the application.
7. Documents Checklist
- ☐ Master’s degree — certificate and mark sheets, 55% (50% reserved)
- ☐ Graduation mark sheets — required for academic-score-based selection
- ☐ UGC-NET / CSIR-NET / SET / SLET certificate
- ☐ PhD degree and award notification, where claiming exemption
- ☐ Evidence of PhD conditions — external examiners, open viva, two published papers (one refereed), two conference presentations
- ☐ Published research papers and conference certificates
- ☐ Caste / category certificate in the state format
- ☐ Age proof
- ☐ Domicile certificate, where required
- ☐ Photograph, signature and printed application
8. Assessment
The Assistant Professor post at Academic Level 10 is among the best-paid graduate-tier entries in India — an entry in-hand of approximately ₹91,500 – ₹96,600, permanent and gazetted, with a clear ladder to Level 14.
But the designation guarantees none of that. The same title in 2026 carried ₹35,000 fixed in Himachal Pradesh and a one-session contract in Bihar.
Before applying, establish three things from the notification:
Is the post permanent, Job Trainee, or contractual? This is the single largest variable, and it is stated plainly in every notification.
Is the pay Academic Level 10, or fixed? ₹57,700 entry with DA and HRA, or a flat monthly figure.
How is selection decided? A written subject paper (MPPSC), a two-paper test plus personality test (HPPSC), or academic score at 88 of 100 (BSUSC). These reward completely different candidates — and if your marksheets are strong but your exam performance is not, the academic-score model is your route.
Recommendations:
Verify your PhD against the four exemption conditions before assuming NET is unnecessary.
In multi-subject drives, track your subject’s advertisement number — windows, corrigenda and exam dates are subject-specific.
Calculate your academic score before applying to any score-based recruitment.
And take the contractual post if the alternative is waiting. BSUSC’s own framing is honest: it is a route into the system without waiting for a regular permanent vacancy notification. For a NET-qualified candidate with no permanent vacancy in sight, a renewable contract that pays entry-level Assistant Professor gross is a reasonable position from which to keep applying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Does clearing UGC NET get me a lecturer job? No. NET establishes eligibility. The recruitment is separate, conducted by State PSCs, State University Service Commissions, universities and individual colleges, each with its own notification, selection process and terms.
Q2. What is the Assistant Professor salary in government colleges? Academic Level 10 under the 7th Pay Commission, entry pay ₹57,700, scale to ₹1,82,400. With DA at 60% (January 2026) plus HRA, the in-hand at entry is approximately ₹91,500 – ₹96,600, depending on city class. Not all posts carry this scale — some states use fixed-pay or contractual structures.
Q3. Is NET mandatory if I have a PhD? Not if the PhD meets the UGC exemption conditions — awarded in regular mode with external examiners, an open viva-voce, at least two published research papers (one in a refereed journal) and two conference presentations from the PhD work. A PhD not meeting all four conditions does not exempt you.
Q4. Is CSIR-NET accepted? Yes. Recruiters accept UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, SET or SLET, or a qualifying PhD.
Q5. What is the age limit? It is set by each recruiter. MPPSC: 21 to 40 as on 1 January 2026. HPPSC: 18 to 45 as on 1 January 2026. Relaxation applies per the respective state’s rules.
Q6. Are all Assistant Professor posts permanent? No. MPPSC’s 949 posts are permanent and gazetted at Level 10. HPPSC’s 369 posts are under a Job Trainee scheme at a fixed ₹35,000 per month. BSUSC’s 3,687 posts are purely contractual for one academic session with annual renewal. Read the notification.
Q7. How is selection done? It varies. MPPSC uses an offline OMR-based subject paper. HPPSC uses a Screening Test, a descriptive Subject Aptitude Test of 120 marks, and a Personality Test. BSUSC uses academic score (88 marks) plus an interview-cum-teaching demonstration (12 marks) with no written exam.
Q8. What is the promotion path? Assistant Professor (Level 10) → Senior Assistant Professor → Associate Professor (Level 13A) → Professor (Level 14). Professor requires a PhD and the prescribed years of service. Progression depends on research papers, teaching experience and academic performance.
