Most women read “Anganwadi Helper honorarium ₹2,250” and close the page. Fair reaction. It looks like an insult.

But that ₹2,250 is only the central government share. It is not what lands in your bank account. A Sahayika in Telangana takes home around ₹8,000. In Maharashtra, ₹7,500 to ₹9,000. In Kerala, ₹7,000 to ₹8,500. And there is one rule buried in the ICDS policy that almost nobody explains properly:
50% of all Anganwadi Worker posts are filled from Helpers with 5 years of service.

That single line changes everything. The Anganwadi Helper post is not a dead end. It is the entry rung of a ladder that runs Helper → Anganwadi Worker → Anganwadi Supervisor, and the Supervisor post is a regular government employee on a full pay matrix with pension, gratuity and leave encashment.
This article is about that first rung — who can apply, what you actually get paid, and how to get in.

1. Who Is a Sahayika and What Does She Actually Do?
The Anganwadi centre is the ground floor of India’s entire child welfare system. There are over 13 lakh of them. Each one runs on two women: the Anganwadi Worker (Karyakartri) and the Anganwadi Helper (Sahayika).
The Worker teaches, records, and reports. The Helper does everything that makes that possible:
- Cooking and serving the supplementary nutrition meal
- Cleaning the centre and keeping the drinking water safe
- Bringing children from their homes to the centre and back
- Helping toddlers with washing, toilet and hygiene
- Assisting on immunisation day and health check-up day
- Supporting the Worker in weighing children and maintaining the centre
It is physical work. It starts early. And in most villages, the Sahayika is the woman children run to before they run to anyone else.
2. Eligibility Criteria – The 5th Pass Question Answered Honestly
Here is the truth that gets distorted everywhere.
In most states, the Anganwadi Helper post requires 8th pass. Some states ask for 10th pass. And in some tribal blocks, remote hill districts and backward areas — where no qualified woman from that village applies — the requirement genuinely drops to 5th pass, or occasionally to “able to read and write”.
So if you are 5th pass, do not assume you qualify. Check your own state’s notification. The qualification is printed in the notification for that district, and it is the only version that counts.
| Criteria | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Qualification | 5th / 8th / 10th pass, state and district specific |
| Age Limit | 18 to 35 years, calculated as on 1 January of the recruitment year |
| Age Relaxation | SC/ST +5 years (max 40) · OBC +3 years (max 38) · PwD as per state rules |
| Gender | Women only — men cannot apply |
| Residency | Permanent resident of the same village, gram sabha or ward where the vacancy exists |
| Marital Status | No bar |
| Application Fee | Usually nil or a small district fee |
The Residency Rule Is Absolute
Understand this before you waste a form. You cannot apply for an Anganwadi Helper post in the next village. You cannot apply in the next ward. You apply only where the vacancy is and where you are a permanent resident with a valid domicile or residence certificate.
Applications from outside the specified locality are rejected outright. Not reviewed. Rejected.
This rule is also your biggest advantage. You are not competing with the whole state. You are competing with the women of one ward.
3. Honorarium – The Real State-Wise Numbers
Say the word properly: it is an honorarium, not a salary. It has two parts.
Central Government share: ₹2,250 per month for a Helper, plus a performance-linked incentive of ₹250.
State Government top-up: whatever that state decides to add. This is where the entire difference comes from.
| State | Approximate AWH Monthly Honorarium |
|---|---|
| Maharashtra | ₹7,500 – ₹9,000 |
| Telangana | ₹8,000 |
| Kerala | ₹7,000 – ₹8,500 |
| Karnataka | ₹6,500 – ₹8,000 |
| Delhi | ₹5,610 + ₹1,200 Conveyance and Communication Allowance |
| Uttar Pradesh | ₹3,000 – ₹5,000 |
| West Bengal | ₹2,250 central + state component, with a proposed increase |
| Bihar | Among the lowest in India |
Look at that table honestly. The same job — the same children, the same hours, the same ICDS guidelines — pays a Maharashtra Sahayika roughly three times what a Bihar Sahayika earns. That is not a mistake. That is the top-up model.
What Is NOT Included
Do not let any website confuse you on this:
- No DA. No HRA. No TA.
- Not covered under the 7th Pay Commission
- No pay scale, no grade pay
- No pension as a Helper
The honorarium is essentially your in-hand amount, with minimal deductions.
4. The Benefits Nobody Mentions
This is the part that makes the post worth far more than the honorarium suggests. As per the social security framework extended to Anganwadi Workers and Helpers:
| Benefit | Cover |
|---|---|
| Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) | ₹2 lakh life insurance |
| Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) | ₹2 lakh accidental cover |
| Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY | ₹5 lakh annual health coverage |
| Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan (PM-SYM) | Voluntary pension scheme |
| ESI and Provident Fund | Where applicable by state |
| Maternity benefits | As per state rules |
A ₹5 lakh health cover for the whole family is worth more to a rural household than an extra ₹2,000 a month. One hospital admission proves it.
5. The Promotion Ladder – The Real Reason to Take This Job
This is the section to read twice.
50% of Anganwadi Worker posts are filled by Anganwadi Helpers with 5 years of service. 50% of Anganwadi Supervisor posts are filled by Anganwadi Workers with 5 years of service.
That is a written promotion channel, not a rumour. Follow the money up the ladder:
| Level | What You Earn |
|---|---|
| Anganwadi Helper (AWH) | ₹3,000 – ₹9,000 honorarium |
| Anganwadi Worker (AWW) | ₹4,500 – ₹18,000 honorarium (Tamil Nadu highest at ₹18,000, Kerala ₹17,000, Telangana ₹13,000) |
| Anganwadi Supervisor | Regular government employee on the state pay matrix, in-hand running to ₹29,200 basic and above — in Telangana, roughly ₹52,000 – ₹55,000 |
The jump from Worker to Supervisor is the biggest single career upgrade in the entire ICDS system — a four-fold income leap, plus pension, gratuity, leave encashment and full state health coverage.
A woman who joins as a Sahayika at 22, becomes a Worker at 27, and clears the departmental route to Supervisor by 35 has built a real government career starting from an 8th pass certificate. That path exists. Very few women are told about it.
One condition: most states require the qualification of the higher post at the time of promotion. If Worker needs 10th pass in your state and you are 8th pass, do NIOS 10th during your five years as Helper. Do it in year one. Not year four.
6. Selection Process – No Exam, Only Marks
There is no written examination for Anganwadi Worker and Anganwadi Helper posts. None. Selection is a merit list.
- Application screening — eligibility and completeness checked at project level
- Merit list prepared on your marks in the qualifying examination — the 5th, 8th, 10th or 12th percentage, whichever your state prescribes for the post
- Priority points — most states give weightage to widows, divorced or destitute women, SC/ST, BPL families, and women from families with no earning member
- Document Verification at the district or ICDS project office
- Final selection list and joining
Because there is no exam, marks are everything. A woman with 78% in 8th beats a woman with 61% in the same ward, and there is no appeal against that.
For Supervisor and CDPO posts, a written exam or interview may be conducted. For Worker and Helper, usually not.
7. How to Apply – Step by Step
Anganwadi recruitment is district-wise. There is no single all-India form. This is the single most important thing to understand, and it is why national job websites are useless for this post.
- Go to your state’s WCD or ICDS portal, or the district ICDS cell page. Several states run dedicated portals; UP, for example, runs a state Anganwadi Bharti portal where you select your district.
- Open the Anganwadi Recruitment 2026 notification for your district.
- Select the post — Karyakartri (Worker) or Sahayika (Helper) — then your Bal Vikas Pariyojana project and your Gram Sabha or Ward. Choose the ward where you are a permanent resident. Nowhere else.
- Register with your name, date of birth as printed on your certificate, mobile number and email. You will receive login credentials.
- Fill the form with exact marks. A single wrong digit in your percentage can knock you off the merit list or get you rejected at verification.
- Upload documents in the prescribed size and format.
- Submit and download the acknowledgement PDF.
- Watch for the merit list and the document verification call.
Some districts still run this offline through the CDPO office or district collector office, with a physical form and a submission counter. Check the notification — do not assume online.
Live example of the pace: as of July 2026, UP WCD district notifications were running with closing dates of 13 July and 16 July 2026 for roughly 1,288 and 2,548 vacancies. Telangana’s WDCW is preparing a large drive of around 15,247 Worker, Mini Worker and Helper posts. These windows are short. Miss the district notice and you wait a year.
8. Documents Checklist

- ☐ Income certificate or BPL ration card
- ☐ Widow certificate or divorce decree, if claiming priority
- ☐ Death certificate of husband, where widow weightage is claimed
- ☐ Passport size photographs
- ☐ Bank passbook linked to Aadhaar — your honorarium comes by DBT

9. Should You Take This Job? An Honest Answer
Take it if: you live in the village, you are 8th pass and stuck, you want a respected position with a ₹5 lakh health cover for your family, and you are willing to play the five-year game to reach Worker and then Supervisor.
Think hard if: you are in a low top-up state like Bihar or UP where the Helper honorarium sits at ₹3,000 to ₹5,000, and you have a real alternative earning more. The prestige does not pay the electricity bill.
The deciding factor is your state. In Maharashtra, Telangana, Kerala or Karnataka, the Sahayika post is genuinely worth taking on money alone. In the low-paying states, it is worth taking only if you commit to the promotion ladder.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Can a 5th pass woman become an Anganwadi Helper? In some states and in specific tribal or remote blocks, yes. In most states the requirement is 8th pass and in several it is 10th pass. Only your district’s notification is authoritative.
Q2. What is the Anganwadi Helper salary in 2026? It is an honorarium, not a salary. The central share is ₹2,250 plus a ₹250 incentive. With the state top-up, the total runs from around ₹3,000 in the lowest states to about ₹9,000 in Maharashtra.
Q3. Is there any exam for Anganwadi Helper? No. Selection is purely a merit list on your qualifying exam marks, followed by document verification.
Q4. Can men apply for the Anganwadi Helper post? No. Anganwadi Worker and Anganwadi Helper posts are for women only.
Q5. Can I apply from another district? No. You must be a permanent resident of the same village, gram sabha or ward where the vacancy exists, with a valid domicile certificate. Outside applications are rejected.
Q6. Can an Anganwadi Helper become an Anganwadi Worker? Yes — 50% of Worker posts are filled from Helpers with 5 years of service. This is the single strongest reason to take the post.
Q7. Do Anganwadi Helpers get a pension? Not as a regular government pension. They can join PM-SYM, a voluntary pension scheme, and are covered by PMJJBY, PMSBY and Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY. A full government pension comes only at the Supervisor level.
