Do you want to do this Job?
The Anganwadi Supervisor post is the first genuine government job in the ICDS structure — and understanding why is worth more than any other fact in this guide.Anganwadi Workers and Helpers are not government employees. They are honorary workers who receive a fixed monthly honorarium — not a salary — with no DA, no pension, and no promotion rights.

An Anganwadi Supervisor is a fully regularised state government employee, with a proper pay matrix salary, Dearness Allowance, NPS pension, annual increments, paid leave and a clear promotion ladder that runs to a gazetted officer post.
“Moving from Anganwadi Worker to Anganwadi Supervisor is the single most important career upgrade in the ICDS system — both in salary and employment status, from an honorarium to a regularised government pay scale.”

In-hand salary: ₹25,000 to ₹55,000 per month, depending on state. Promotion leads to CDPO at ₹55,000 to ₹80,000. Pension is NPS — 10% from you, 14% from the government.

1. The Distinction That Defines the Post
| Anganwadi Worker / Helper | Anganwadi Supervisor | |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Honorary worker — not a regular government employee | Permanent, regularised government employee |
| Payment | Fixed monthly honorarium — not a salary | Pay matrix salary |
| DA | None | Yes — currently ~53%, revised January and July |
| Pension | None | NPS — 10% employee + 14% government |

| Monthly | ₹10,000 – ₹20,000 honorarium | ₹25,000 – ₹55,000 in hand |
| Entitlements | ESI, health insurance, maternity benefits | Full government allowances, gratuity, leave encashment |
“Supervisor and Officer-level posts are generally permanent government jobs, while Anganwadi Workers and Helpers receive honorarium-based payments under state schemes.”
“This is where most people get confused.”
The Supervisor post is a Group B government post with a fixed pay scale, annual increments, DA revisions, NPS pension, paid leave, and a real promotion path that can take you to a gazetted officer position.
It is not an honorarium-based contract role.
2. Salary — And the Notification Trap
In-hand: ₹25,000 to ₹55,000 per month, driven almost entirely by state pay structures.
| State | Position |
|---|---|
| Karnataka, Haryana, Maharashtra | The highest packages — senior supervisors take home over ₹50,000 |
| Bihar, Rajasthan | Lower starting salaries — entry-level closer to ₹25,000 |
State pay scales, as notified:
| State | Scale |
|---|---|
| Odisha (OSSSC) | Pay Level 8 — ₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400. Average starting in-hand ₹44,000 – ₹55,000 |
| Uttar Pradesh | Pay Level 5 — ₹29,200 to ₹92,300 |
| Most states | Old band ₹5,200 – ₹20,200 with Grade Pay ₹2,400 |
| Odisha and Haryana (regular cadre) | Grade Pay ₹4,200 |
| Some central/state cadre vacancies | ₹63,700 to ₹99,000 under a higher pay band |
The maximum: ₹1,12,400 basic at the top of the OSSSC scale, plus all applicable allowances — reached through years of service and annual increments.
The Trap Worth Knowing
“Most state WCD notifications still quote the old 6th Pay Commission pay bands because many state departments have not updated their notification templates. Your actual disbursed salary is calculated using the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix and is higher than what the notification band alone suggests.”
Read that carefully. The notification understates the pay.
A candidate reading “₹5,200 – ₹20,200, Grade Pay ₹2,400” in a state notification is reading a superseded 6th CPC band. The actual salary is computed on the 7th CPC matrix and is higher.
The calculation: Basic Pay (7th CPC) + DA + HRA + TA + Other Allowances − NPS deduction.
DA is currently approximately 53% of basic pay, revised every January and July.
Compare against the Anganwadi Worker: ₹10,000 – ₹20,000 as an honorarium, with no DA, no pension and no regular allowances.
3. Pension Benefits — The Precise Position
This is the section the post is most often misreported on, so the answer should be exact.
| Benefit | Detail |
|---|---|
| NPS Pension | 10% of basic from the employee + 14% from the government on Basic + DA |
| Old Pension Scheme (OPS) | “Those who entered service on or before January 1, 2004, are under the old pension scheme.” Those who joined after 2004 are in the NPS |
| Gratuity | Payable on retirement after a minimum of 5 years |
| Leave Encashment | Up to 300 days of accumulated Earned Leave can be encashed at retirement |
| Medical | For self and family |
| Leave | Generous leave policies |
The government’s 14% NPS contribution is the point. It is a real employer contribution to a retirement corpus — and an Anganwadi Worker receives nothing equivalent, because an honorary worker is not on a pay scale at all.
Anganwadi Workers and Helpers do receive some entitlements — ESI, health insurance and maternity benefits — but not pension.
The 300-day leave encashment and gratuity after five years are standard regular-employee terminal benefits. They attach to the Supervisor post because it is a regular post.
4. Promotion — The Ladder
The full ICDS career path:
Anganwadi Helper → Anganwadi Worker → Supervisor → Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) → District Programme Officer
From Supervisor upward:
| Step | Detail |
|---|---|
| Anganwadi Supervisor | Entry-level after clearing the competitive examination |
| Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) | A Group B Gazetted Officer post at Pay Level 7–8, managing an entire block-level ICDS programme and overseeing multiple Supervisors. In-hand ₹55,000 – ₹80,000 |
| District Social Welfare Officer / District Child Protection Officer / District Programme Officer | Further promotion — administrative roles at district and state level |
“In many states, a supervisor can take the departmental promotional exam for CDPO after 8 to 12 years of service, receive a significantly higher salary and have [administrative authority].”
“The promotion to CDPO is the most significant milestone in this career path. The CDPO is a gazetted government officer overseeing an entire block-level ICDS programme, with a significantly higher salary and administrative authority. For a motivated Anganwadi Supervisor, this is a genuinely achievable and rewarding career goal.”
The Departmental Route Into the Post
There is a second door, and serving Anganwadi Workers should know it.
“Anganwadi Workers can directly give a departmental examination after 5–10 years of service to get promoted as a supervisor” — in states including UP, Rajasthan and Bihar.
Some states fill Supervisor posts “through departmental examinations from the promoted Anganwadi Worker / Helper cadre.”
For an Anganwadi Worker, that departmental examination is the single most valuable thing available — it converts an honorarium into a regularised pay scale with pension.
5. Eligibility
| Criterion | Detail |
|---|---|
| Qualification | Graduate in any discipline — Arts, Science or Commerce — from a recognised university |
| Preferred subjects | Home Science, Social Work, Nutrition, Child Development, Psychology, Sociology may be preferred |
| Higher posts | May require a Bachelor’s or Master’s in Social Work, Nutrition or Child Development |
| Gender | “Only for female candidates in most states” — “the rules vary from state to state; refer to your state’s recruitment notification” |
| Age | 18 to 35 general, extending to 40 in some states. OBC: up to 38. SC/ST: 40–45 |
| Residence | “Must be an Indian citizen and a resident of the concerned state/district” |
| Language | State-specific — West Bengal requires “ability to read, write and speak Bengali” |
A note on the qualification. Sources conflict. Most state notifications require a graduate degree; one source states the minimum is Class 12 (Intermediate), and another lists “10/12th/bachelors.” The graduate degree is the standard requirement in the states documented — verify in your state’s notification.
The language condition recurs, as documented across this series — Bengali in West Bengal, and equivalents elsewhere. It is absolute where it applies.
6. Selection
The recruiting body is the State PSC or the State Subordinate Staff Selection Commission (SSSC).
| Stage | Detail |
|---|---|
| Written Examination | General Knowledge, Child Development, Nutrition, Health and Reasoning |
| Merit-based (some states) | “Some states do not have any written test; the selection is completely based on academic merit (12th/graduation marks)” |
| Interview / Document Verification | In some states |
| Training | “Selected candidates shall have to undergo an in-service training programme at one of the ICDS Training Centres before they are appointed” |
West Bengal’s process: preliminary screening test → written exam → viva-voce.
Odisha (OSSSC): negative marking of 0.33 marks (1/3rd) for each incorrect answer. A Skill Test (Computer Skills) may apply, with a minimum qualifying percentage — commonly 40%.
Note the in-service training. Appointment follows training at an ICDS Training Centre — it is not immediate on selection.
7. District-Wise Vacancy — The Honest Answer
This is where the Worker and Supervisor posts differ again, and it matters for anyone searching district-wise lists.
For Anganwadi Workers and Helpers:
“Can I apply for an Anganwadi job from a different district? No. Anganwadi Workers and Helpers must be permanent residents of the same ward/village/district where the vacancy exists. A domicile or residence certificate is mandatory.”
“Ensure you apply only for a ward where you are a permanent resident.”
That is a hard ward-level restriction.
For Supervisors: recruitment is conducted at state level by the State PSC or SSSC, with state residence required rather than ward-level residence. District-wise vacancy tables are published in the notification, and postings follow allotment.
Recent Supervisor vacancy counts:
| State | Vacancies |
|---|---|
| Odisha (OSSSC) | 286 for the 2026 cycle — registration 7 January to 22 February |
| West Bengal | 2,954 in the previous ICDS Women Supervisor recruitment; “the 2026 cycle may also release a significant number of posts” |
Treat aggregate figures with caution. One portal advertises “86,450+” Anganwadi Supervisor vacancies — a figure that almost certainly aggregates Worker and Helper posts across all states, which are far more numerous. The Supervisor counts are in the hundreds to low thousands per state.
West Bengal’s official notification is expected on the WBPSC website, and Odisha’s through osssc.gov.in.
8. How to Apply
- Visit your state’s official WCD / ICDS portal — or wcd.nic.in for central information. West Bengal: icdswb.in → the “Live Application” tab in the left sidebar. Odisha: osssc.gov.in.
- Find the recruitment notification — under “Recruitment” or “Anganwadi Recruitment 2026.”
- Download and read the official notification PDF carefully before applying.
- Register — “Create a new account using your mobile number and Aadhaar.” An OTP may be sent for verification. Note your Registration ID and password and keep them safe.
- Fill the application form — personal details, educational qualification, address, and preferred district.
- Upload documents — photograph, 10th certificate, Aadhaar, Domicile Certificate, Residential Certificate, Caste Certificate (if claiming reservation).
- Pay the application fee — some states accept payment through SBI e-Pay only.
- Submit and print the acknowledgement slip.
“For any discrepancy, always refer to the official notification PDF.”
9. What the Job Is
“The supervisor is the main link between Anganwadi Workers at the village level and the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) at the block level.”
“The ICDS Supervisor displays supervisory capacity over 20–25 Anganwadi centres.”
The six ICDS services being monitored:
| Service | Detail |
|---|---|
| Supplementary Nutrition | Delivery of balanced and nutritious food to children (0–6 years) and pregnant/lactating mothers |
| Immunisation | Co-administration of vaccination drives with health authorities |
| Health Check-Up | Monitoring the health status of children and mothers |
| Referral Services | Referring sick or malnourished children to healthcare facilities |
| Non-formal Pre-school Education | Monitoring early childhood centres in Anganwadi |
| Nutrition and Health Education | Community awareness |
“The ICDS Supervisor plays a crucial role in monitoring Anganwadi Centres, implementing nutrition programs, supervising child welfare schemes, and ensuring women empowerment initiatives at the grassroots level.”

11. Assessment
In favour:
- A fully regularised permanent state government post — not an honorarium-based contract
- In-hand ₹25,000 – ₹55,000, rising to ₹1,12,400 basic at the top of the Odisha scale
- NPS pension — 10% employee + 14% government on Basic + DA
- Gratuity after 5 years and leave encashment up to 300 days
- Graduate in any discipline — no specialisation required, though Home Science, Social Work, Nutrition and Child Development are preferred
- A clear promotion ladder — CDPO at Pay Level 7–8, Group B Gazetted, ₹55,000 – ₹80,000 in hand, via departmental examination after 8–12 years
- A departmental route in — Anganwadi Workers can sit a departmental examination after 5–10 years in UP, Rajasthan and Bihar
- Some states select on academic merit alone, with no written test
- State-level recruitment — not ward-restricted, unlike Worker and Helper posts
- “For graduate women seeking a stable government career, the Anganwadi Supervisor post remains one of the most accessible and rewarding options in India today”
Against:
- Female only in most states — though rules vary
- Age 18 to 35 in most states
- Language conditions apply and are absolute where they exist
- Vacancy counts are modest — 286 in Odisha’s 2026 cycle
- Negative marking of 0.33 in the OSSSC paper
- In-service training at an ICDS Training Centre precedes appointment
- Salary varies nearly two-fold by state — ₹25,000 in Bihar against ₹50,000+ in Karnataka
- Sources conflict on the minimum qualification and on state salary figures
Recommendations:
If you are a graduate woman, this is among the most accessible permanent government posts available — a degree in any discipline, no specialisation required, and in some states no written test at all.
Do not read the pay band in the notification as your salary. Most state WCD notifications still quote superseded 6th CPC bands. Your actual salary is computed on the 7th CPC matrix and is higher — Basic (7th CPC) + DA at ~53% + HRA + TA − NPS.
If you are an Anganwadi Worker, the departmental examination is the most valuable thing available to you. After 5–10 years of service in UP, Rajasthan and Bihar, it converts an honorarium with no pension into a regularised pay scale with NPS, gratuity and a promotion ladder. It is the single most important career upgrade in the ICDS system.
Target the higher-paying states if you can relocate — Karnataka, Haryana and Maharashtra pay over ₹50,000 to senior supervisors; Odisha’s scale runs to ₹1,12,400 basic at Pay Level 8.
And plan for the CDPO examination from the start. 8 to 12 years of service, a departmental examination, and the post becomes Group B Gazetted at ₹55,000 – ₹80,000, running a block-level programme.

Disclaimer: This article is for general information only. Anganwadi Supervisor recruitment is conducted independently by each state’s Public Service Commission or Subordinate Staff Selection Commission under the Women & Child Development department; eligibility, qualification, age limits, gender restrictions, pay scale, selection process and vacancy counts differ by state and by recruitment year. Figures cited are drawn from specific state notifications and published pay structures and are not applicable nationally; sources conflict on the minimum qualification and on state salary figures. Many state WCD notifications continue to quote superseded 6th Pay Commission pay bands while actual salaries are computed on the 7th Pay Commission matrix. Anganwadi Workers and Helpers are honorary workers receiving an honorarium, not regular government employees. Candidates must download and read the official notification from their state’s WCD/ICDS portal before applying and treat it as the final authority.
