Two railway opportunities carry the word “technician” and are routinely confused. They are not the same thing, and the difference is permanent employment.

RRB Technician is a permanent Indian Railways post — Pay Level 2 or Level 5, with DA, HRA, pension, medical cover and travel concessions. CEN 02/2026 is live, carrying 6,557 vacancies, with applications open until 29 July 2026.
Railway Apprentice is a training engagement under the Apprentices Act — a stipend, a certificate, and no guarantee of employment.

But they connect, and this is the point most candidates miss: a Course Completed Act Apprenticeship (CCAA) is an accepted qualification for RRB Technician Grade III — equal to an ITI certificate.
The apprenticeship is not a dead end. It is an alternative route into the permanent post.

1. The Qualification Rule That Excludes Diploma Holders
This is the single most consequential provision in CEN 02/2026, and it runs opposite to intuition.
| Post | Qualification |
|---|---|
| Technician Grade I Signal (Level 5) | B.Sc in Physics / Electronics / Computer Science / IT / Instrumentation — or a 3-year Diploma in Engineering in those streams — or a Degree in Engineering in those streams |
| Technician Grade III (Level 2) | Matriculation / SSLC + ITI (NCVT/SCVT) in the notified trade — or Matriculation / SSLC + Course Completed Act Apprenticeship (CCAA) in that trade |
And then the rule:
“Diploma/Degree in Engineering will NOT be accepted in lieu of Course Completed Act Apprenticeship / ITI for Pay Level-2 posts unless otherwise specified.”
A diploma holder cannot apply for Technician Grade III on the strength of the diploma. The higher qualification does not substitute downward.
The practical consequence:
- An ITI holder is eligible for Grade III — 6,234 posts.
- A diploma holder is eligible for Grade I Signal — 323 posts — and not for Grade III unless they also hold an ITI or CCAA.
The diploma opens the better-paid post and the far smaller pool. The ITI opens the larger one. A candidate holding both has the widest access — and must pay two fees to use it.
One additional route: for Technician Grade-III (S&T), candidates with 10+2 including Physics and Mathematics are also eligible.
The Trades
The 6,234 Grade III posts span 24 trades. The largest is Fitter (PU & WS) with 1,109 posts.
Common eligible trades: Fitter, Welder, Electrician, Wireman, Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic Diesel, Machinist, Carpenter, Blacksmith, Welder (Open Line), Refrigeration & AC, EMU, Electrical (TRD), Track Machine, Millwright, Painter, Crane Driver, Bridge and Trimmer.
Each Grade-III post accepts its own list of ITI trades. Check the exact trade list for your chosen post in Annexure A of the notification — a trade eligible for one post is not automatically eligible for another.
2. The Apprenticeship Route
Railway apprenticeships are engaged by zonal railways and production units under the Apprentices Act, 1961, selected on the merit of Class 10 and ITI marks — generally without a written examination — and paying a stipend.
They carry no guarantee of employment. That is the honest position, and it is stated in the notifications.
What they do carry is a qualification.
On completing the apprenticeship, the candidate holds a Course Completed Act Apprenticeship (CCAA) certificate — which CEN 02/2026 accepts for Technician Grade III on exactly the same footing as an ITI certificate.
Read that against the diploma rule above. An engineering diploma — a higher qualification — is not accepted for Level 2. A CCAA is.
For a Class 10 candidate, the sequence is coherent: apprenticeship → CCAA → eligible for 6,234 permanent Level 2 posts, alongside ITI holders.
Apprentice notifications are issued zone by zone — Northeast Frontier Railway, Eastern Railway and others each publish their own. They are not centralised, and they do not appear in the CEN. Monitor your zonal railway’s site directly.
3. Age
| Post | Age as on 1 July 2026 |
|---|---|
| Technician Grade I Signal | 18 to 33 years |
| Technician Grade III | 18 to 30 years |
Relaxation: OBC-NCL +3, SC/ST +5, PwBD +10 (for UR), Ex-Servicemen and other special categories per railway rules.
Two rules that void relaxation:
“Maximum single relaxation only — not cumulative.”
“SC/ST/OBC-NCL applying against UR vacancies get no age relaxation.” — the same provision seen in AIIMS Senior Resident recruitment. Relaxation attaches to the reserved vacancy, not the candidate.
A conflict to note: one source states the bands as 18–36 for Grade I Signal and 18–33 for Grade III. The figures reported consistently elsewhere are 33 and 30. Verify in the CEN PDF.
4. Salary
| Post | Pay Level | Basic |
|---|---|---|
| Technician Grade I Signal | Level 5 | ₹29,200 |
| Technician Grade III | Level 2 | ₹19,900 |
Plus: Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance, pension benefits, medical facilities and travel concessions.
One provision to plan for: “Selected candidates will undergo training wherever prescribed, during which only a stipend is paid rather than full pay.”
The full salary begins after training. Budget accordingly — the same trap covered in our Safai Karamchari guide, where a two-year probation pays fixed pay without DA or HRA.
Context: Technician Grade I Signal at ₹29,200 (Level 5) sits above the Commercial cum Ticket Clerk at Level 3 (₹21,700) and level with Goods Guard — reachable on a 3-year diploma rather than a degree.
5. Selection
| Stage | Detail |
|---|---|
| 1. Computer Based Test | Single CBT per Pay Level — 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutes |
| 2. Document Verification | Shortlisted RRB-wise at 1:1 of vacancies on CBT merit |
| 3. Medical Examination | Post-specific standards |
Negative marking: 1/3 per wrong answer. Marks are normalised across shifts.
There is no Psycho test or CBAT — unlike RRB ALP. For candidates who have been deterred from ALP by the aptitude test, Technician has no equivalent stage.
Note the 1:1 shortlisting ratio for DV — tighter than NTPC’s 1:20 for CBT 2. The CBT effectively decides selection, subject to DV and medical.
The Medical Rule Worth Knowing
Medical fitness category is post-specific:
| Category | Posts |
|---|---|
| A-3 | Track Machine |
| B-1 | Signal, and most Grade III running and maintenance posts |
| B-2 | Crane Driver |
| C-1 | Workshop and Production Unit posts |
And the provision that distinguishes this from SSC CGL:
“A candidate found unfit for a higher-preferred post but fit for a lower one is allotted the post he/she is medically fit for.”
This is genuinely favourable. In SSC CGL, a candidate allotted a post whose medical standard they fail has their candidature rejected — no reallocation. RRB reallocates. A candidate who fails the A-3 standard for Track Machine but meets C-1 is allotted a workshop post rather than being eliminated.
Preference order still matters — but the downside of an ambitious preference is smaller here than in any other recruitment covered in this series.
6. Fees — And Two Rules
| Category | Fee |
|---|---|
| General | ₹500 |
| Reserved | ₹250 |
Rule one: separate fee for each Pay Level. Applying for both Grade I Signal and Grade III means paying twice.
Rule two — the refund: refund is made only to the Aadhaar-seeded bank account, and only if you appear in the CBT. No refund for incomplete or rejected applications, or for non-appearance.
The fee functions as an attendance deposit — the same structure as ISRO’s ₹750. Appear, and you get it back.
Two income thresholds worth knowing: EWS is family income below ₹8 lakh. EBC — fee concession only, no job reservation — is family income below ₹50,000.
7. Application
Applications are accepted online only, at rrbapply.gov.in. Forms submitted through any other mode are not considered.
- Complete One-Time Registration (OTR) with a valid mobile number, email and Aadhaar-seeded bank account. Candidates with existing accounts from previous RRB CENs can use the same credentials.
- Choose one RRB per Pay Level. The chosen RRB and your account email/mobile cannot be changed later.
- Fill in personal, category, communication and educational details exactly as in your official documents.
- Select the preferred RRB region, Pay Level and post preference order.
- Capture a live photograph using a webcam or mobile camera.
- Upload the signature — JPG/JPEG, 30–49 KB, 140×60 pixels.
- Pay the fee online — net banking, debit/credit card or UPI. Service charges are borne by the candidate.
- Submit before 29 July 2026 (23:59) and print the form.
Fee payment closes 31 July 2026 — two days after the application deadline.
Modification window: 1 to 10 August 2026, at ₹250 per modification. Account details and the chosen RRB cannot be modified.
Rules That Disqualify
- Those awaiting final results are not eligible. Qualifications must be held on or before 29 July 2026.
- Biometric details are recorded at every stage. Any mismatch may lead to disqualification.
- The community status declared in the application determines reservation eligibility. Subsequent changes will not be recognised.
- SC/ST/OBC/EWS certificates must be in the prescribed formats and valid as on the closing date.
- Only the e-call letter is allowed at the test centre. Electronic gadgets, books, pens and paper are banned.
Helpline: 9592-001-188 / 0172-565-3333, or rrb.help@csc.gov.in, 10 AM to 5 PM.
On agents: the RRBs never charge money through middlemen. The fee is paid online through the portal only.
8. Documents Checklist
At application:
- ☐ Aadhaar-seeded bank account — required for OTR and refund
- ☐ Live photograph via webcam or mobile
- ☐ Signature — JPG/JPEG, 30–49 KB, 140×60 px
At Document Verification — originals plus two sets of self-attested photocopies:
- ☐ Matriculation / SSLC certificate
- ☐ ITI certificate (NCVT/SCVT) or Course Completed Act Apprenticeship certificate
- ☐ B.Sc / Diploma / Degree in Engineering — for Grade I Signal

- ☐ NOC from the current employer, if already in government service
9. Assessment
In favour:
- 6,557 vacancies — up from 6,238 in the previous cycle, against a contracting trend elsewhere in the railways
- Permanent Indian Railways employment with pension, medical, travel concessions and railway passes
- No CBAT or Psycho test — unlike RRB ALP
- Medical reallocation — unfit for a higher post but fit for a lower one means allotment, not rejection
- CCAA is accepted equally with ITI — the apprenticeship route leads somewhere
- Fee refundable on appearing for the CBT
- 24 trades, across all 21 RRBs
- Grade I Signal at Level 5, ₹29,200, on a 3-year diploma
Against:
- A diploma does not qualify for Grade III — the higher qualification does not substitute downward
- 1:1 shortlisting for DV — the CBT decides
- 1/3 negative marking
- Stipend, not full pay, during training
- One RRB per Pay Level, unchangeable
- Result-awaited candidates are ineligible
- Age 30 for Grade III
Recommendations:
If you hold an ITI, apply for Grade III — 6,234 posts against Grade I Signal’s 323.
If you hold a 3-year engineering diploma, apply for Grade I Signal — Level 5 at ₹29,200, nearly ₹10,000 above Grade III’s basic. But understand that your diploma does not make you eligible for Grade III.
If you hold both an ITI and a diploma, apply for both — and note that each Pay Level carries its own fee.
If you hold neither, the apprenticeship is the route. A Course Completed Act Apprenticeship is accepted for Grade III exactly as an ITI is — and an engineering diploma is not.
Check the trade list in Annexure A against your specific ITI trade before selecting a post, and set preferences knowing that medical reallocation protects you — a rare provision, and the reason to rank ambitiously here where you would not elsewhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What is the qualification for RRB Technician Grade III? Matriculation / SSLC plus an ITI certificate (NCVT/SCVT) in the trade notified for the post, or Matriculation / SSLC plus a Course Completed Act Apprenticeship (CCAA) in that trade. For Technician Grade-III (S&T), 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics is also accepted.
Q2. Can a diploma holder apply for Technician Grade III? No. “Diploma/Degree in Engineering will not be accepted in lieu of Course Completed Act Apprenticeship / ITI for Pay Level-2 posts unless otherwise specified.” Diploma holders are eligible for Technician Grade I Signal at Level 5.
Q3. What is the salary? Technician Grade I Signal: ₹29,200 at Pay Level 5. Technician Grade III: ₹19,900 at Pay Level 2. Plus DA, HRA, TA, pension, medical facilities and travel concessions. During training, only a stipend is paid rather than full pay.
Q4. Does a railway apprenticeship lead to a job? Not directly — apprenticeships carry no guarantee of employment. But the Course Completed Act Apprenticeship (CCAA) certificate is accepted for RRB Technician Grade III on the same footing as an ITI, which makes the apprenticeship a qualification route into the permanent post.
Q5. Is there a CBAT or psycho test? No. Selection is CBT, Document Verification and Medical Examination only. Unlike RRB ALP, there is no Psycho/CBAT test.
Q6. What happens if I fail the medical for my preferred post? “A candidate found unfit for a higher-preferred post but fit for a lower one is allotted the post he/she is medically fit for.” Medical categories are post-specific — A-3 (Track Machine), B-1 (Signal and most Grade III posts), B-2 (Crane Driver), C-1 (workshop/PU).
Q7. Can I apply to more than one RRB? No — one RRB per Pay Level, and the chosen RRB cannot be changed later. Applying for both Grade I Signal and Grade III requires two separate applications and two separate fees.
Q8. Is the fee refundable? Yes — but only to the Aadhaar-seeded bank account, and only if you appear in the CBT. There is no refund for incomplete or rejected applications, or for non-appearance.
Disclaimer: This article is for general information only. Vacancy numbers are provisional and may change. Eligibility, trade lists, age limits and relaxations, medical categories, fees, refund rules and dates are set by the official CEN No. 02/2026 and are revised each cycle. Secondary sources conflict on the total vacancy count (6,557 or 6,565) and on the age bands. Railway apprenticeships are engaged separately by zonal railways under the Apprentices Act and carry no guarantee of employment. Candidates must read the official CEN PDF on rrbapply.gov.in and the 21 RRB websites before applying and treat it as the final authority.
