RBI Grade B Recruitment 2026: Eligibility, Salary Structure and How to Apply

The Reserve Bank of India recruits Grade B Officers at a basic pay of ₹78,450 and initial gross emoluments of approximately ₹1,54,936 per month, with a total CTC of roughly ₹25 to 30 lakh per annum.

It is also, by some distance, the hardest graduate entry in this series. The 2026 cycle notified 60 vacancies and drew approximately 62,000 applications — a ratio of over 1,000 applicants per post.

Two features set it apart from every other examination covered here: a minimum 60% in graduation, which most graduate examinations do not impose; and a Defined Benefit Pension Scheme, which very few institutions in India still offer.

1. The 60% Bar — The Real Gate

This is the condition that distinguishes RBI Grade B from every other examination in this series, and it eliminates candidates before they begin.

RouteGeneral / OBC / EWSSC / ST / PwBD
GraduationMinimum 60% aggregateMinimum 50%
Post-GraduationMinimum 55% aggregatePass marks

Compare: UPSC CSE, SSC CGL, IBPS PO and LIC AAO all require a bachelor’s degree with no minimum percentage. RBI Grade B requires 60%.

The Details That Decide Eligibility

“Aggregate” means the average of marks across all semesters or years — not the marks in any individual semester. A candidate with 62% in the final year but 57% aggregate does not qualify.

The date of result declaration is the date of passing — not the date the degree was physically received, and not the convocation date. The 2026 notification added a clarification that the passing date is based on the official marksheet or certificate date.

Final year students are not eligible. Results must be officially declared on or before the notification date. One source suggests final-year candidates completing graduation by the interview stage may apply; the more specific and widely stated position is that they are not eligible. Verify this clause directly in the notification — the consequence of error is disqualification.

Open university and online degrees are accepted, provided the university is recognised by the UGC or the Government of India.

A CGPA/OGPA/CPI conversion table applies for institutions awarding grades on a 10-point scale rather than percentages.

CA (ICAI) qualification is also accepted for the General post — a route many candidates are unaware of.

2. The Three Streams

StreamQualificationWork
General DR (Direct Recruitment)Graduation with 60%General banking supervision and regulatory departments
DEPR — Department of Economic and Policy ResearchMaster’s in Economics with 55% or equivalentMonetary policy research, economic analysis, policy recommendations
DSIM — Department of Statistics and Information ManagementMaster’s in Statistics or MathematicsData analytics, financial surveys, statistical reporting

DEPR and DSIM are specialist streams with a separate Phase II paper — Economics or Statistics in place of Finance & Management.

Salaries and growth paths are the same across all three streams.

The vacancy split matters: 40 General DR against 10 DEPR and 10 DSIM. A candidate holding a Master’s in Economics or Statistics competes in a stream of 10 posts against a far smaller field than the General pool.

3. Other Eligibility Conditions

CriterionDetail
Age21 to 30 years as on 1 April 2026
Reference date change (2026)Shifted from 1 September 2025 to 1 April 2026, changing the eligible birth range
RelaxationPer government rules
NationalityIndian citizen, or subject of Nepal or Bhutan; other specified categories require an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India
Work experienceNot required
Attempts (General/EWS)6 — candidates who have already appeared six times for Phase I are not eligible
Attempts (SC/ST/OBC/PwBD)Unlimited

On attempts: an attempt is counted only when a candidate appears for the Phase I examination. Filling the application form does not count. Exceeding the limit results in permanent disqualification.

On Nepal subjects: eligible to sit the examination, but the offer of joining issues only on producing the eligibility certificate at document verification.

4. Salary and Benefits

ComponentDetail
Basic Pay₹78,450 per month
Pay scale₹78,450 – 4050 (9) – ₹1,14,900 – EB – 4050 (2) – ₹1,23,000 – 4650 (4) – ₹1,41,600 over 16 years
Initial gross (without HRA)Approximately ₹1,54,936 per month
IncludesBasic Pay, Special Allowance at 25% of Basic, DA, HRA for metro cities, CCA and other allowances
Total CTCApproximately ₹25 to 30 lakh per annum

RBI Grade B officers follow RBI’s own pay scale — not the IBA Bipartite Settlement that governs public sector bank salaries. This is why the structure differs from IBPS PO.

Benefits

  • Defined Benefit Pension Schemeone of very few institutions in India still offering this
  • Staff Quarters at major RBI offices, or HRA at 15% of basic pay if accommodation is not provided
  • Full medical coverage for employee and family under the RBI Medical Scheme
  • Concessional interest rates on home, car and personal loans
  • Leave Fare Concession (LFC) / Leave Travel Concession (LTC)
  • Conveyance, Telephone and Family Allowances
  • Knowledge Updation Allowancenewly introduced in 2026

The Defined Benefit Pension deserves emphasis. Almost every government and PSU entry covered in this series operates under NPS, a defined contribution scheme where the payout depends on market returns. RBI’s defined benefit scheme guarantees the payout. Over a 30-year career, that difference is substantial and is rarely factored into salary comparisons.

Where It Sits

PostBasicGross
RBI Grade B₹78,450~₹1,54,936
LIC AAO₹88,635~₹1,26,000 (A-Class city)
SBI PO~₹94,000 – ₹98,000
IBPS PO₹48,480~₹80,000 – ₹83,000

Note the inversion. LIC AAO’s basic pay (₹88,635) is higher than RBI Grade B’s (₹78,450) — but RBI’s gross is substantially higher, because its allowance structure, including the 25% Special Allowance, is richer. Comparing basic pay alone gives the wrong answer.

RBI Grade B’s gross is roughly 1.6 times SBI PO’s and nearly double IBPS PO’s.

The 2026 revision increased gross emoluments by approximately ₹4,500.

5. Selection Process

StageMarksCounts toward merit?
Phase I (Preliminary)200No — qualifying only
Phase II (Main)300Yes

Final merit375Phase II + Interview

Phase I

FeatureDetail
ModeOnline, objective
Marks200
Duration120 minutes
SectionsGeneral Awareness, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning
Sectional timingApplied — separate time allotted for each test
Negative marking0.25 per wrong answer
Cut-offsSectional and overall — both must be cleared

Phase I is purely a screening examination. Its marks do not enter the final merit list.

As with RRB NTPC and IBPS PO, this should govern preparation. Clear Phase I efficiently; the examination that decides selection is Phase II.

The syllabus is similar to other bank examinations — which is why candidates preparing for IBPS PO and SBI PO can carry that preparation into Phase I largely unchanged.

Phase II

PaperMarks
Economic & Social Issues (ESI)100
English (Writing Skills)100
Finance & Management (F&M)100
Total300

A mix of objective and descriptive questions, testing both knowledge and analytical ability. Negative marking of 0.25 applies.

For DEPR and DSIM candidates, the Economics or Statistics paper replaces Finance & Management.

This is where the examination is won or lost, and it is where bank-examination preparation stops transferring. ESI and F&M are subject papers with no equivalent in IBPS PO or SBI PO, and the English (Writing Skills) paper is descriptive.

Interview

75 marks. Candidates shortlisted on Phase II scores are called.

A personality assessment is conducted before the interview, but no marks are awarded for it — the same structure IBPS introduced in 2026.

Candidates may choose Hindi or English for the interview.

The final merit list combines Phase II and Interview marks, along with applicable grace marks.

Phase II centres are significantly fewer than Phase I centres — select major cities only. Interviews are conducted at some of the Phase II centres, as stated in the interview call letter.

9. Assessment

RBI Grade B is the highest-paying and most competitive graduate entry in this series.

In favour:

  • Gross ₹1,54,936 — roughly 1.6× SBI PO and nearly double IBPS PO
  • CTC ₹25–30 lakh per annum
  • Defined Benefit Pension — a guaranteed payout, where nearly every alternative offers NPS
  • Any graduation discipline for the General stream — no stream restriction
  • CA (ICAI) accepted for the General post
  • Unlimited attempts for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD
  • Phase I syllabus mirrors other bank examinations — the preparation transfers
  • Attempt counted only on appearing for Phase I

Against:

  • 60 posts against approximately 62,000 applications — over 1,000 applicants per post
  • The 60% graduation bar excludes candidates whom UPSC, SSC and IBPS would accept
  • Age 30, with a reference date that moved in 2026
  • 6 attempts for General/EWS, with permanent disqualification beyond
  • Final year students are not eligible
  • Phase II is subject-based — ESI and F&M have no equivalent in bank examinations

Recommendations: if you are preparing for IBPS PO or SBI PO and hold 60% in graduation, add RBI Grade B — Phase I is nearly free, and the pay is in a different bracket. But understand that Phase I is not the exam. Merit rests on Phase II (300) plus Interview (75), and ESI, F&M and descriptive English writing are where the preparation actually has to be built.

If you hold a Master’s in Economics or Statistics, consider DEPR or DSIM — same salary, same growth path, and a field of 10 posts rather than 40 against a fraction of the applicants.
