1. Eligibility — The Point Most Sources State Incorrectly
A considerable number of published guides reverse the CHSL qualification requirement. The correct position is as follows:

Read that carefully. The Science with Mathematics condition applies only to DEO posts in those three specified organisations. It does not apply to LDC, JSA, Postal Assistant, Sorting Assistant, or to DEO posts elsewhere.
A Commerce or Arts candidate is fully eligible for LDC, JSA, PA, SA and most DEO posts. Guides stating otherwise have transposed the two clauses.

LDC carries the maximum vacancies each year, followed by JSA.
Two Points That Should Influence Your Post Preference
First — the JSA advantage. JSA and LDC carry identical basic pay at Level-2. However, JSA postings are in the Central Secretariat, predominantly in New Delhi, which is an X-category city attracting HRA at 24% of basic pay. An LDC posted to a smaller town draws HRA at a lower rate. The same basic pay therefore yields a higher in-hand salary in JSA, purely on account of the posting city.
Second — the Level-4 gap. Postal Assistant, Sorting Assistant and DEO sit at Level-4 with a basic of ₹25,500, against Level-2 and ₹19,900 for LDC and JSA. That is a difference of ₹5,600 in basic pay from day one — and because DA, HRA, NPS contribution, gratuity and pension are all computed on basic, the gap compounds across a career.
Candidates frequently set LDC as first preference by default because it has the most vacancies. The Level-4 posts pay materially more. Set preferences deliberately.

Both are qualifying only — marks are not added to the merit position. The Skill Test is compulsory for all DEO candidates, with no exemption.
The practical warning: qualifying does not mean unimportant. A candidate may clear Tier 1 and Tier 2 comfortably and still lose the post by failing the typing test. Begin typing practice at the start of preparation, not after the Tier 2 result. This is among the most common avoidable failures in CHSL.
Document Verification
Originals and photocopies are required — birth certificate, Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets, and caste or PwD certificate where applicable. A basic medical examination is conducted, and joining letters issue after successful verification.
4. Self Slot Selection
SSC operates a Self Slot Selection facility through the candidate portal, allowing candidates to choose their examination city, date and shift according to convenience.
This is a genuine advantage and is under-used. Candidates who select early secure preferred cities and dates; those who leave it late take what remains. Monitor the portal for the slot selection window when it opens.
5. Application Procedure
- Complete One-Time Registration (OTR) on the SSC portal. This is done once and is reusable across all SSC examinations. Complete it before the notification is published.
- When the notification is released, log in and open the CHSL application.
- Complete personal and educational particulars.
- Set post preferences deliberately — LDC, JSA, PA, SA, DEO. Allotment to department and post follows merit and preference.
- Upload the photograph and signature. The signature must be in JPEG/JPG format, 10 to 20 KB, with dimensions of approximately 4.0 cm (width) × 2.0 cm (height).
- Pay the application fee — ₹100 for General candidates. No fee is payable by female candidates, SC, ST, Physically Handicapped and Ex-Servicemen.
- Submit and retain the confirmation.
- Use Self Slot Selection when the window opens.
- Download the Tier 1 admit card, released 7 to 10 days before the examination, using the registration number and date of birth.
On the admit card: carry a printed copy together with one valid government photo ID — Aadhaar, Voter ID, PAN or Passport. Digital copies on a mobile are not accepted at most centres.
The 2026 Schedule
The SSC CHSL 2026 notification is expected around July 2026, with the application window remaining open for approximately one month. Sources differ on the precise date; the SSC calendar and the official portal are the authoritative reference.

7. Assessment
SSC CHSL is the strongest central government opportunity available on a Class 12 qualification, for four reasons:
No interview at any stage. Selection rests entirely on computer-based examination and a qualifying skill test. There is no subjective assessment.
No limit on attempts. A candidate may appear every year until the age of 27, and the preparation compounds.
Any stream qualifies for LDC, JSA, PA, SA and most DEO posts. There is no percentage requirement.
The fee is ₹100, or nil for women and reserved categories.
The realistic difficulties: the examination draws lakhs of applicants for a few thousand posts; the Tier 2 negative marking of 1 mark per error is severe; and the typing and skill tests, though qualifying, eliminate candidates who neglect them.
Three recommendations:
Prioritise the Level-4 posts. PA, SA and DEO start at ₹25,500 against ₹19,900 for LDC and JSA — a permanent differential that compounds through DA, HRA and pension.
Where Level-2 is the realistic outcome, prefer JSA over LDC. The Central Secretariat posting in Delhi attracts 24% HRA, raising in-hand pay above an LDC posting in a smaller city on identical basic pay.
Start typing practice in month one. Thirty-five words per minute is not difficult to reach with consistent practice, and impossible to reach in the fortnight between the Tier 2 result and the skill test.
