1. Where ASI’s Entry-Level Posts Actually Come From
This is the section that determines where to apply.

SSC Selection Post is worth naming specifically. It exists precisely for posts that do not fit the standard CGL/CHSL profile — specialist, department-specific roles with their own qualification requirements. Phase 14 carried 3,003 posts.
The practical instruction: a candidate seeking an entry-level ASI post should be preparing for SSC, and exercising Ministry of Culture and ASI preferences at application — not waiting for an ASI notification that will not come in that form.

The “proper channel” requirement is the tell. Deputation posts are for serving government officers, applying through their own department. They are not open applications.

3. Young Archaeologist (ASI-YA) — The One Entry-Level Opening
The 2026 cycle’s genuinely accessible ASI opening, and worth setting out fully because it is the model for what ASI does advertise directly.

Responsibilities: documenting antiquities held by ASI field offices; assisting field offices in fieldwork related to heritage management, survey and documentation.
Two points worth noting.
Experience is not required. In the clarifications issued around the circular, a candidate asking “I don’t have any experience and I’m currently pursuing a diploma which is not yet complete. Can I still apply?” was answered “Yes” — the essential qualification is a Master’s degree, and nothing more.
And the qualification is read broadly. A candidate with “M.A in AIHC only with Archaeology as my generic subject” plus a six-month ASI internship was confirmed eligible.

This is an engagement under a mission, not a permanent post — but for a Master’s holder in archaeology, it is direct ASI field experience, and it requires no prior experience to enter.
4. Assistant Archaeologist
The specialist entry-level post, recruited by ASI, UPSC or State PSCs depending on the cadre.

Note the Underwater Archaeology Wing — the 2026 Consultant advertisement specifically sought a Master’s in Underwater Archaeology, which is an unusually narrow specialisation and correspondingly small field.

Two entirely different routes, and they do not overlap:
Route One — SSC
For Group B and C posts: complete One-Time Registration on the SSC portal, apply for CGL, CHSL, MTS or Selection Post when notified, and exercise Ministry of Culture and ASI preferences at application.
This is the volume route. It is where entry-level ASI posts are actually filled.
Route Two — ASI Direct
For deputation, contract and consultant posts, and engagements such as Young Archaeologist:
- Monitor asi.nic.in — the Jobs / Vacancies section.
- Prepare the application in the prescribed format with all required enclosures — certificates, experience proof.
- Route the application through proper channel, if you are a departmental or government employee.
- Send the complete application by post to the address stated in the notification.
Applications are frequently offline. ASI’s 2026 notifications directed applications to Dharohar Bhawan, Tilak Marg, New Delhi and to the NMMA office at Greater Noida — by post.

Post-based application carries a timing risk that online application does not. Post takes days. The closing date is a receipt date, not a despatch date.
