3. On Verifying a Listing
IRB publishes the following on its own Current Openings page, and it is worth reading before responding to any offer:
“We have noticed that fake job offers in the name of IRB Infrastructure Developers Ltd. (IRBIDL) have been circulated by some unauthorized persons/fraudsters. Also, there might be an occasion where the emails ask the recipient to appear for an interview for a job opening with IRBIDL and to deposit a certain amount as a refundable interview security in a designated bank account.”
The guidance that follows is simple and positive:
Apply through the company’s own website — irb.co.in for IRB, recruitments@mepinfra.com for MEP Infrastructure — or through established job portals where the employer’s name is listed.
No employer in this sector requires a payment to attend an interview. A toll operations role is an ordinary private job: you send a resume, you attend an interview, and if selected you are paid. Money moves toward the employee, not away.
And check the company name against NHAI’s toll plaza list, which names the concessionaire operating each stretch. If the company is not the one operating that plaza, the listing is not what it appears.

Shift In-charge — The Supervisory Tier
The job description is unusually detailed, and it maps the career:

Note what the Shift In-charge requirement accepts: experience in “transportation, logistics, customer service, or cash management” — not only toll operations. A candidate from retail cash handling, logistics or a call centre has a transferable profile.
The Technical Route
A separate stream exists, and it pays differently:
“Provide technical support for ETC/FASTag systems and toll management software.”
Skills: Software troubleshooting, CCTV, LAN, Windows, Computer hardware.
“Willingness to travel and work at project/toll plaza locations, if required.”
For an ITI or diploma holder in electronics or IT, this is a distinct and better-skilled entry than the collection booth.
The Senior Tier
“Good knowledge of toll plaza civil works, MEP coordination, and ITS systems. Minimum 8–10+ years’ experience in toll plaza / highway infrastructure projects.”
ITS — Intelligent Transport Systems. This is where the career leads, and it requires a decade in the sector.
5. FASTag Is the Skill
Across nearly every listing, one requirement recurs:
“Knowledge of toll management systems and electronic toll collection (such as FASTag).”
It appears in the Toll Collector listing, the Shift In-charge listing, the Supervisor listing and the technical support listing.
FASTag is no longer a feature of the job. It is the job. Cash lanes have contracted; the work is now transaction monitoring, reconciliation, exception handling and system support.
A candidate who can speak credibly about FASTag operations, lane performance and reconciliation is qualified in the way this sector actually measures.
“Monitored FASTag and cash lane performance to maintain smooth traffic flow” — that is a line from a Shift In-charge profile, and it is the shape of the work.
6. Working Conditions — Stated Honestly
Shifts: “Should be comfortable to work in any 8 hours shift either 08:00am to 04:00pm, 04:00pm to 12:00am or 12:00am to 8:00am.”
Toll plazas operate 24/7. Rotational shifts, including nights, are a condition of the job — not an occasional requirement.
The work: standing or sitting for long hours, at a booth, on a highway, handling cash and transactions with a continuous flow of vehicles.
Location: toll plazas are on highways, frequently away from towns. The listings reflect this — Luharli, Chhapar, Bikaner, Dharwad are not metro postings.
And the honest framing on pay: most toll operations listings do not publish a salary figure. Job portals offer salary comparison tools for these roles, and candidates should use them — Indeed and Glassdoor both carry salary search for Toll Operator, Toll Supervisor and Shift In-charge by city. Do not assume; check the range for your city before applying.
7. Where the Jobs Are
The market is modest but steady. Job portals carry roughly 29 toll plaza listings and around 650 listings mentioning toll operations at any given time, across Mumbai, Noida, Ahmedabad, Bikaner, Dharwad and highway locations nationally.

That last one is the practical trick. If you want to work at a specific toll plaza, find out who operates it. NHAI publishes the concessionaire against each plaza. That company is your employer, and its careers page is your application route.

There is no NHAI toll collector notification, there is no examination, and there is no merit list.
What there is: an ordinary private job market with a defined hierarchy, a clear skill requirement (FASTag), an explicit openness to freshers, and companies that accept applications continuously.
For a candidate who can start next month rather than next year, that is not a disadvantage.
